CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Elon University softball team suffered a 9-2 setback on the road at Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon, April 22, at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
Elon (25-16) concluded its seven-game road trip with its first visit to the 49ers (26-24) since 2019. The Phoenix ended its seven-game swing with a 5-2 record with Charlotte winning its fourth straight over the maroon and gold.
At the Plate
• Elon had six hits in the game with
Kaitlyn Wells going 2-of-3 at the dish to pace the Phoenix offensively.
Lani Wyrick added two RBI for the maroon and gold, a new season-high for the freshman.
In the Circle
•
Meredith Wells took the loss for the Phoenix, falling to 2-2. The fifth-year was one of five pitchers that appeared in the circle for Elon.
The Rundown
• The Phoenix got a couple of base runners on with one out in the top of the first.
Allee Seering and
Kaitlyn Wells reached on singles before the 49ers turned a double play off a fielder's choice to end the threat.
• Charlotte responded with a three-run bottom of the first. The 49ers took advantage of some Phoenix miscues and took a 3-0 lead going to the second frame.
• Elon responded to join Charlotte on the scoreboard in the top of the second.
Chloe Hatzopoulos reached on a leadoff single to left and advanced to second on a walk to
Teagan Baulsir. The pair moved into scoring position after a sac bunt before the 49ers struck out the next batter to threaten to leave the runners stranded.
Lani Wyrick however drove a single into left field, scoring Hatzopouls and Baulsir to bring the Phoenix within one, 3-2.
• The 49ers came back with a five-run bottom of the second to expand their lead to 8-2. Charlotte then added another run in its home half of the fourth to push its advantage to 9-2.
• Both teams could not generate much offensively for the remainder of the game as the score would stand with Charlotte taking the 9-2 win.
On Deck
• Elon returns to Hunt Softball Park for its final weekend home series, hosting UNCW on April 25-27.
