ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team was handed a 5-4 setback versus UNCW in game two of its CAA series on Saturday afternoon, April 26, at Hunt Softball Park.
The Phoenix fell to 26-17 on the year and 18-5 during CAA play. The Seahawks improved to 25-21 and 11-12 versus league opponents.
At the Plate
• The Phoenix had five hits in the game, but none after the third inning.
Allee Seering went 2-of-3 to lead Elon at the plate while
Gabi Schaal had two RBI for the Phoenix.
In the Circle
•
Anna Dew was given the loss in relief, falling to 2-5. The sophomore pitched 5.0 innings and allowed one run with four strikeouts.
•
Taylor Cherry started the game and went 2.0 innings and allowed three earned runs with four strikeouts.
The Rundown
• The Seahawks got on the board in the top of the first. UNCW saw its first two runners reach on a walk and a single before connecting on a two-out home run to take a 3-0 lead.
• Elon came back to add some runs of its own in the home half of the first. The Phoenix saw its first two runners of the frame reach on singles before a
Gabi Schaal single to left center drove both home. Schaal moved to second on the play before going to third on a hit by
Chloe Hatzopoulos. Schaal would score on a fielder's choice before Hatzopoulos also crossed the dish off a UNCW error to give the Phoenix a 4-3 lead.
• UNCW came back to tie the game in the top of the second. Elon struck out the first two batters of the inning, but the Seahawks kept the inning alive on a single and a Phoenix error. An RBI single to left field tied the game at 4-all.
• The Seahawks retook the lead in the top of the fourth, again with two outs. UNCW scored on a triple to right center to go in front, 5-4.
• The game would go into an hour-and-a-half rain delay before resuming in the fourth. Both teams went through a quick rest of the fourth and fifth frames before the Seahawks returned to the plate in the top of the sixth. UNCW loaded the bases with two outs, but the Phoenix was able to induce the final out to escape the jam.
• Elon however could not find the offense to return the favor and get back in the game, as UNCW retired the final 12 batters to escape with the 5-4 win and force the rubber match.
On Deck
• The rubber match between the Phoenix and the Seahawks is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time. Elon will host its Senior Day ceremonies pregame beginning at 12:15 p.m.
