Rising Phoenix: This Week In Elon Athletics

ELON, N.C. –  It was a successful week in Elon athletics, highlighted by a walk-off win for the Elon University softball team, which led Elon to a sweep over the College of Charleston. 

CAA Championships begin this weekend for the Elon University women's golf team, who will compete in Southport from Friday, April 11 to Sunday, April 13.

Each Monday, Rising Phoenix will preview the week ahead in Elon athletics. Here is a look at each Elon team competing this week.

Women's Golf
The Elon University women's golf team will compete one final time in the regular season at the Tennessee Spring Challenge on Monday, April 7 before the CAA Championships. Last time out, the Phoenix finished sixth overall at the Ironwood Invitational led by junior Ashley Lafontaine, who tied for 20th individually. The CAA Championships will take place in Southport, North Carolina, with rounds on Friday, April 11, Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13.

Baseball
After a 10-0 shutout in seven innings over William & Mary, the CAA's top offense, the Elon University baseball team returns home for four games at Latham Park this week. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Declan Lavelle threw the complete game shutout, giving up eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts. He was also named CAA Pitcher of the Week after his performance, the second time this season he has won the award. In two starts at first base this weekend, redshirt junior Troy McGirt went 4-7 with two RBI and three runs scored. The Phoenix will host the North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. before facing Towson for a three-game weekend series. 

Women's Tennis
The Elon University women's tennis team played two CAA matches last week and picked up a 6-1 win over North Carolina A&T and a 7-0 win over Charleston. Playing at No. 2 singles for the first time this season, sophomore Mariana Reding earned two wins. Reding also picked up a win at No. 1 doubles against Charleston with partner sophomore Simone Bergeron. Elon continues its stretch of home matches, hosting UNCG on Wednesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. before the team's annual Senior Day on Sunday, April 13 at noon.

Track & Field
At the VertKlasse Meeting last week, the Elon University track & field team had another strong showing, posting multiple top 10 finishes and personal bests. Junior Julia Bell won the 1500 invitational with a personal best time of The 400 relay team of Duna Viñals, Mya Lee, Meghan Wilcox and Arianna Alexander finished in eighth place and eighth best in school history with a time of 46.80 seconds. The Phoenix will compete in the Duke Invitational from Thursday, April 10 to Saturday, April 12.

Softball
This past weekend, the Elon University softball team secured its fourth CAA series win and its third CAA sweep of 2025. Elon was led by Co-CAA Pitcher of the Week, sophomore Anna Dew, who pitched a complete game on Sunday, giving up only four hits and one run with six strikeouts. Dew also pitched the final out in the top of the ninth, getting the Phoenix out of a bases loaded jam, before senior third baseman Allee Seering delivered a walk-off RBI single. Senior McKenna McCard also threw a complete game on Saturday, giving up just three hits, no runs and getting three strikeouts. Elon will travel to Philadelphia to face Drexel for a three-game weekend series.

Lacrosse
Sophomore Mackenzie Coleman posted her first multi-goal performance of 2025 against Delaware, scoring two goals on four shots. She also added an assist, leading the team with three points. The Elon University lacrosse team will be back on Rudd Field to face the top team in the CAA, Stony Brook, on Friday, April 11 at 5 p.m. The team will have a quick turnaround before traveling to Williamsburg to face William & Mary on Sunday, April 13 at noon.

Men's Golf
The Elon University men's golf team will be competing for the final time in the regular season at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13. The team finished 10th overall at the Maridoe Invitational last week, led by senior Matthew Doyle and sophomore Jack Wieler, who tied for 17th and 22nd, respectively.
