Softball Takes Series Over Camels; Cliches Second Seed for CAA Tournament

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Elon University softball team closed out the regular season with a 6-1 win over Campbell on Saturday, May 3, in its CAA rubber match versus the Camels at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Elon improved to 29-18 overall and 21-6 in the CAA, its most wins in a conference season in school history. Campbell fell to 34-18 and 19-8 in league play. The win also secured the Phoenix the No. 2 seed for the upcoming CAA Championships, the second time that Elon has been the second seed at the league tournament.

At the Plate
• Elon had eight hits in the game. Kaitlyn Wells went 3-of-4 at the plate with three runs scored and a home run. Her home run was the 15th of the season for the Roswell, Ga., native – tying the single-season program record. Chloe Hatzopoulos drove in a pair of runs for the Phoenix to lead the maroon and gold.

In the Circle
McKenna McCard won her second game of the weekend and improved to 12-3 on the season. The senior allowed one earned run with five strikeouts.

The Rundown
• Elon got off to a fast start in the top of the first. The Phoenix loaded the bases with no outs before Hatzopoulos drove in a couple on a single up the middle. A sac fly and a bases-loaded walk plated two more runs for the maroon and gold to take a 4-0 lead.
• The Phoenix added another run in the top of the second. Kaitlyn Wells reached on a fielder's choice before crossing home plate on an RBI double from Gabi Schaal to increase Elon's lead to 5-0.
• The Phoenix added one more insurance run in the top of the seventh. Wells took the first pitch she saw over the center field fence to lead off the frame, recording her 15th round tripper of the season, to help Elon increase its lead to 6-0.
• Campbell broke its scoring stalemate with a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh, cutting Elon's lead to five. That would be the only blemish for McCard as the Ashburn, Ga., native struck out the final batter to secure the 6-1 win.

On Deck
• The Phoenix starts play at the CAA Softball Championships, beginning play on Thursday, May 8 at 2:30 p.m. versus the winner between No. 3 College of Charleston and No. 6 Hofstra.
