BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Elon University softball team rallied to cut its deficit to one after the sixth inning, but ultimately fell in its CAA semifinals contest versus host and No. 4 seed Campbell, 6-2, on Friday afternoon, May 9, at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Elon falls to 30-19 with its first loss of the tournament. Campbell (37-18) advances to the championship round and stays unbeaten in the tournament.
At the Plate
• Elon struggled offensively, being held to only two hits in the game.
Kaitlyn Wells had one of those base knocks, a two-RBI double to increase her single-season total to 53 RBI on the year.
Lani Wyrick had the other hit for the Phoenix.
In the Circle

McKenna McCard took the loss for the Phoenix, falling to 13-4 on the year. McCard pitched 4.0 innings and allowed two runs with three strikeouts.
Isley Duggins and
Anna Dew pitched the remaining frames for the Phoenix in relief.
The Rundown
• The Camels pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the third. Campbell led off with a single and then scored off an RBI triple to put the Phoenix down 1-0.
• Campbell doubled its lead in the top of the fourth. The Camels drew a free pass to start the inning and had the runner score on a sac fly to left to go up 2-0.
• The Phoenix faced a 3-0 deficit after the top of the fifth. Campbell scored on a one-out RBI single up the middle to increase its advantage.
• Elon was able to rally in the bottom of the sixth. The Phoenix had its first two batters reach on fielding error and a single before having runners at the corners with two outs as Wells stepped to the plate. The senior was able to drive a double to the wall in center field, scoring the runners to bring the Phoenix within one, 3-2.
• The Camels, however, responded with a three-run top of the seventh to add some insurance to their lead, taking a 6-2 advantage. Elon could not answer in its half of the inning and would get retired in order to end the game.
On Deck
• The Phoenix will face the winner between No. 1 Delaware and No. 6 Hofstra later this evening to stay alive at the CAA Championships. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
