Rising Phoenix: Lightning Offense Helps Elon Storm Past Davidson

ELON –  A 31-point second quarter helped the Elon University football team to a commanding victory in its home opener Saturday against the Davidson Wildcats. A lightning-fast offense and stifling defense lead the program to its highest-scoring performance since 2010.

The Phoenix proved that it could weather the storm after kickoff was delayed two hours due to inclement weather. As the team waited to take the field at Rhodes Stadium for the first time this season, the mentality of its players remained steadfast.

"Our mindset was to stay loose and keep your eyes on the prize," redshirt senior defensive lineman Jake Louro said. "We've got a game to play. We've got our job to do. We've got things to finish."

After jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, redshirt freshman quarterback Landen Clark looked to air the ball out down the field for Elon early in the second quarter. His moment finally came early in the second quarter when he noticed a one-on-one matchup to his right and lobbed the ball toward the back of the endzone. On the other end of the throw was redshirt junior receiver Landyn Backey, who made an incredible over-the-shoulder grab for a touchdown, his first career receiving score.

The "Landen to Landyn" connection was clicking all night for the Phoenix and played a large role in building Elon's second quarter lead. Backey finished the night with five catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns, the second coming on the very next drive when Clark hit him deep off play action for a 44-yard score.

"Over the weeks, we've been getting more and more chemistry, and I think that just helps us overall," Backey said. "This week, there was more of an emphasis on throwing the ball and making plays. I thought we did a really good job tonight."

Clark had no issue finding his other receivers as well. Sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Fuhrmann was the recipient of Clark's third touchdown toss on a 20-yard pass to the endzone logo, the highlight moment of his five-catch, 67-yard performance. Redshirt sophomore Zimere Winston wasn't far behind him either, hauling in four grabs for 56 yards, including catching a heater in traffic on third down to keep a drive alive. When Clark exited the game in the third quarter, he had accounted for 284 yards, including four touchdowns.

"We were really clicking," head coach Tony Trisciani said. "We were on fire in that second quarter."

Once Elon's commanding lead had been built, the run game took over. Sophomore running back TJ Thomas Jr. looked like he'd been shot out of a cannon on every carry, and he finally found paydirt late in the first half, running through a tackle to get his first touchdown of the year from 15 yards out. However, junior running back Jimmyll Williams may have bested him in the game, putting up 79 yards and a touchdown while averaging almost nine yards per carry. Junior running back Dan Frederick also got in on the fun, putting up a career high 51 yards and recording his first touchdown.

Elon's lights-out defense was another huge factor in securing the blowout victory. For the second straight week, redshirt linebacker Brodie Carroll stole the show, recording five tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, including a third down play where he chased down the scrambling Wildcat quarterback and knocked the ball out of his hands, recording a sack and forced fumble. Louro also impressed on the statsheet, recording two tackles for loss as he helped Elon hold Davidson to just 65 rushing yards. He recorded a pass breakup as well, a rare feat along the defensive line.

However, redshirt sophomore defensive back Tony Hart III was the one to open the flood gates for the maroon and gold, punching the ball loose from the hands of the opposing running back with less than a minute to go in the second quarter. The pigskin bounced off the wet grass for only a second before junior safety DJ James-Hamilton scooped it up and gave the Phoenix the ball in the redzone, a momentum dagger that helped Elon walk into the locker room leading 41-0.

"We were hot," Trisciani said. "We were really running hot at the end of that second quarter. Coming into the locker room, I didn't have to tell them much. They knew we had to come out and play in the second half. Nobody was too high. It was all about business. We knew we had 30 more minutes, so I think they handled it like a true football team."

When the fireworks were over, the Phoenix had emerged victorious with a 55-7 win, the most points scored by the team in 15 seasons and its biggest margin of victory since, ironically, beating Davidson 56-0 in 2009. Elon also more than tripled the Wildcats' total yardage, outgaining Davidson 547 yards to only 158 yards. The win will go down as one of the most dominant performances in program history.

"I'm just really proud of everybody, so proud of the guys that had to go in and play some snaps," Trisciani said. "We were able to get a lot of guys in that football game. Those reps are so valuable. We can look at those reps of our backups and help us figure out who is the next man in. We can't replicate that in practice.

Elon's focus now shifts to the Western Carolina Catamounts, who the team will meet on the road in Cullowhee at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
