Elon Blanks Radford For Second Straight Win

Pair Of Second-Half Goals Keep Phoenix Unbeaten

RADFORD, Va. – Behind a pair of second-half goals, the Elon University men's soccer team (2-0-1) secured a 2-0 victory Tuesday night at Radford (0-2-1) to remain unbeaten on the season.

Carlos Levy put the Phoenix on the board with his first career goal, followed by Sumner Nenninger tacking on an insurance tally for Elon in the closing minutes with a goal of his own. Elon outshot Radford, 11-4, on the night and generated 11 corner kick opportunities.

In net, CAA Defensive Player of the Week Jackson Leavitt pitched his second shutout of the campaign, stopping Radford's lone attempt on goal.

With the victory, the Phoenix has now won three straight matches against the Highlanders and its last two road trips to Radford.

How It Happened
  • Elon controlled the ball for most of the opening half and created chances throughout. The Phoenix generated six corner opportunities in the opening 45 minutes and took four shots.
  • The best chance of the first half for Elon came in the 35th minute, when Dominik Renz was tackled in the box by a Radford defender, leading to a penalty kick. Martin Kozak took the kick for the Phoenix, but Radford goalkeeper Ben Miller made a lunging save to keep the match scoreless.
  • Elon continued to knock on the door in the second half. In the 61st minute, a Colin Veltri shot rang off the right post, barely missing the net for what could have been a go-ahead goal for the Phoenix.
  • In the 69th minute, Elon earned its 10th corner kick of the night. Joe Taylor crossed the ball into the box from the corner and a leaping Levy grazed the ball before it bounced off a defender and into the net for the contest's first goal.
  • Radford created one of its best scoring chances in the 81st minute, with Carter McClain forcing Leavitt to make his lone save of the night.
  • The Phoenix tacked on a second goal to seal the victory in the 88th minute. After Renz found Kozak on the right side of the field, Kozak centered the ball to a sprinting Nenninger, who beat Miller for an Elon goal.
  • Elon closed out the contest from there to secure the 2-0 victory.
