Rising Phoenix: This Week In Elon Athletics

ELON – The Elon University volleyball team went 2-0 to begin CAA play, sweeping Hampton over the weekend. The women's golf team also captured a share of its first individual title this fall, defending home turf at the Elon Invitational.

Up ahead, the Elon University football team returns home for Family Weekend, taking on Hampton.

Each Monday, Rising Phoenix will preview the week ahead in Elon athletics. Here is a look at each Elon team competing this week.

Women's Golf
Sophomore Emma Hansen was the highlight for the Phoenix last week as she tied for fourth place at the Elon Invitational with a 1-under-par 212. She led the team to a share of first place and earned CAA Co-Golfer of the Week after her performance. Senior Ashley Lafontaine earned sixth place individually while freshman Lilli Downer tied for ninth place. Elon will compete at the Red Bandanna Invitational in Canton, Massachusetts, on Monday and Tuesday.

Men's Soccer
The Elon University men's soccer team took home a 2-0 win over Davidson and a 1-1 tie against William & Mary last week to remain undefeated for the season. Junior midfielder Martin Kozak and redshirt freshman midfielder Oscar Tonidandel scored the first goals of their Phoenix careers against Davidson, with Kozak adding his second of the week against William & Mary. Elon will travel to Farmville, Virginia, to face Longwood on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before resuming CAA play by hosting Campbell on Friday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball
Two matches were played in Schar Center last weekend and both matches ended in sweeps for the Elon University volleyball team, which sits 2-0 atop the CAA standings. Graduate student outside hitter Simrin Carlsen paced the Phoenix in both kills and digs over the weekend, ending with 20 kills and 19 digs overall. The team will take a break from CAA play this week, hosting NC Central on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and facing Radford on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Men's Tennis
At the Porter's Neck Invitational, freshman Nick Fisk and sophomore Nikola Parichkov teamed up to win the B doubles draw. The duo competed in the finals on Sunday, taking down their competitors from UNCW, 6-3. The Phoenix will compete in the Liberty Dual Tournament in Lynchburg, Virginia, from Friday to Sunday.

Women's Soccer
Down 2-1 against Hofstra on Thursday with time running out, junior midfielder Gabby Hoschek played hero for the Elon University women's soccer team, scoring a goal off the right corner of the post in the 90th minute to secure a 2-2 tie. Senior forward Ashlee Brehio scored the other goal in the second minute, which marked her second of the season. Elon will continue its road stretch this week, facing William & Mary on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Football
The Elon University football team is set to begin CAA play this weekend in Rhodes Stadium for Elon's annual Family Weekend. The Phoenix will face off against the Hampton Pirates on Saturday at 2 p.m. Against ETSU last week, junior defensive back DJ James-Hamilton led the team with 13 tackles, nine of which were solo tackles. Redshirt junior defensive back Jesse Powell II followed up with a career-high 11 tackles, 10 of which were solo.
