Elon Propels Past NC Central

ELON – The Elon University volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over NC Central on Wednesday at Schar Center, marking the Phoenix's third straight sweep.
 
Elon (4-8) closed its three-match homestand with its 26th consecutive victory over its intrastate foe. Cameron Lanier recorded 10 kills, her seventh double-digit kill effort of the season. Lindsey Harris added a season-high eight kills with a .438 hitting percentage and contributed a pair of blocks.
 
The Eagles (3-8) were limited to a .098 hitting percentage, with Karmen Harper leading the offense with eight kills.
 
THE RUNDOWN
  • After an early 4-4 tie in the opening set, Elon went on a 9-1 run to take a 13-5 lead and force an NC Central timeout. The Eagles responded with three straight points, but the Phoenix quickly regained control and pulled away for a 25-14 win.
  • NC Central led 4-3 to start the second set before Elon answered with a 4-0 run to move in front 7-4. The Eagles stayed close, trimming the deficit to 17-16 before forcing an Elon timeout. NC Central later surged ahead 21-20, but the Phoenix closed with a 5-1 run to take the set 25-22.
  • The Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in set three and led 7-3 before Elon rallied with a 5-1 spurt to tie the score at 8-all. After trading points to 9-9, the Phoenix grabbed the lead for good with a 4-0 run. NC Central pulled within 12-11, but Elon responded with another 5-1 stretch capped by a Shannon O'Laughlin ace. The Phoenix never looked back, sealing the sweep with a 25-18 win.
 
NOTES AND STATS
  • Elon's last stretch of three straight sweeps came in 2024, when it won four in a row with two victories over UNCW and two at Hampton.
  • Simrin Carlsen tallied a team-high 14 digs along with seven kills. It was her seventh double-digit dig performance this season.
  • Kayla Palmer finished with 21 assists for the second straight match, one shy of her career high. She also dug out six attacks.
