Elon Ties No. 15 Wake Forest

Phoenix Secures Second Straight Draw Against Ranked Opponent

ELON – A defensive stalemate culminated in a 0-0 tie Saturday night between the Elon men's soccer team (8-2-6) and No. 15 Wake Forest (11-3-2) at Rudd Field.

The Phoenix outshot Wake Forest on the night and had several chances in the final 15 minutes of the contest to find the winning tally. Elon limited the Demon Deacons to just eight total shot attempts and outpaced Wake Forest in second-half shots, 9-5.

The tie was Elon's second straight against a ranked opponent after drawing No. 20 UNCW last weekend. The Phoenix improved to 1-0-1 this season against ACC opponents with results against Wake Forest and Duke.

The result extended Elon's unbeaten streak to 12 matches, a program record for consecutive matches without a loss in a single season. With the scores from the CAA South Division on Saturday, the Phoenix also secured a CAA Tournament berth.

How it Happened
  • Jordin Wilson had a scoring opportunity in the eighth minute but his shot from the left side of the box was denied by redshirt sophomore Owen Barnett in Wake Forest's net.
  • Wake Forest did not attempt its first shot on goal until the 44th minute when Drew Hartman saved Jose Perez's try toward the bottom corner of the net. Both offensives took three shots each in the first half.
  • Wake Forest's second shot on goal was also by Perez in the 57th minute, but it was again saved by Hartman.
  • The Phoenix had an opportunity in the 76th minute for a go-ahead goal in transition by Diego Thompson, but his shot was denied by a lunging Barnett, who then saved a shot on the rebound by Graham Jones shortly after.
  • Wake Forest had an opportunity of their own in transition in the 81st minute, but Hartman saved a low shot on goal.
  • Alex Wharton narrowly snuck the ball past Barnett in the 84th minute but the ball was cleared off the goal line by Wake Forest to keep the match scoreless.
  • Caleb Frakes had Elon's best look of the night in the 86th minute, barely missing high on a long-range strike that went over the crossbar.
  • Frakes' shot was the final for either team on the night as the match ended scoreless.

Notable Numbers
  • The Phoenix is now unbeaten in its last 12 matches (7-0-5), which sets a program record for Elon's longest single-season streak of matches without a loss. Elon had previously gone unbeaten in 11 straight contests in both 1985 and 1987.
  • Elon also extended its unbeaten streak at Rudd Field to 19 matches with the result.
  • The tie was Elon's fourth straight overall, its longest streak of draws since also tying four in a row in 2017.
  • This was the second time the Phoenix has shut out an ACC opponent this season after also blanking Duke on Sept. 25 in Durham.
  • Ben Madore was the lone Phoenix to attempt multiple shots in the contest. Eleven different Elon players recorded a shot.
  • Magnus Jacobsen, Weston Jonke, Daire McCarthy and Tønnes Daland all went the full 90 minutes in the field for the Phoenix.
  • Hartman finished the game with three saves for his fifth shutout of the season. Hartman has started in both of Elon's ACC clean sheets this season. This was the seventh clean sheet recorded by the Phoenix as a team this season.
  • The Phoenix has held both ACC opponents it has faced this season to eight or fewer shot attempts. Elon allowed eight shot attempts against the Demon Deacons after conceding just seven against Duke last month.
  • Elon has tied both its matches against ranked opponents this season with the other draw coming Oct. 17 against No. 20 UNCW.
  • The Phoenix halted Wake Forest's four-match winning streak with the tie. Elon is the first team to hold the Demon Deacons without a goal since No. 1 SMU did so on Oct. 2.

Up Next
Elon closes out its regular season Oct. 31 against Campbell at Rudd Field. The Phoenix will look to secure the No. 2 seed in the CAA South for next month's conference tournament in that match.
