ELON – The Elon University volleyball team took the opening set but could not hold off Stony Brook as the Seawolves earned a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-16) victory on Saturday afternoon at Schar Center.

The Phoenix moved to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in CAA play, while Stony Brook improved to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in league action.

Anna Sewell led the Maroon and Gold with a career-high 17 kills on 34 attacks, hitting .353 for the match. Her 17 kills also matched the highest total by an Elon player this season.
Cameron Lanier added six kills, four digs, two assists and a solo block, while
Allie Schultz and
Catherine Rucker each finished with five kills. Rucker also contributed two service aces and three total blocks.

Kayla Palmer paced Elon with 12 assists and nine digs, while
April Rice added 13 assists.
Casey Brower recorded a season-high 16 digs and a career-best eight assists.

Stony Brook was led offensively by Ella Sanders with 17 kills, while Avari Amstutz added 12. Rayanne Wheat dished out 21 assists and Taryn Su added 15. Ayanna Pierre Louis led the Seawolves with five service aces, while Wheat added four, and Damisi Osibodu paced the blocking effort with four total blocks.

THE RUNDOWN
- The teams traded points throughout the early portion of the opening set before Elon began to create separation. With the Phoenix holding a 10-8 advantage, Rucker added a kill before Sewell, Lanier and Caroline Berlekamp followed with kills as Elon used a 5-1 run to take a 15-9 lead into the media timeout, capped by a Shannon O'Laughlin service ace. Stony Brook responded with four straight points to trim the deficit to two, 15-13, and force an Elon timeout. The Phoenix answered with three consecutive points, highlighted by a Lindsey Murphy service ace and a block from Rice and Berlekamp, to push the advantage back to 18-13. The Seawolves made another late push and pulled within one at 21-20, but Elon closed the frame with four unanswered points. Sewell recorded kills on each of the final three points to secure the 25-20 victory.
- Elon opened the second set with three unanswered points behind a Rucker solo block and a Lanier service ace. Stony Brook responded and eventually pulled even at 8-all before taking a 12-10 advantage. The Phoenix answered with consecutive Sewell kills to tie the frame at 12-all and again at 13-all, but the Seawolves regained control with a 6-2 run to build a 19-15 lead. Elon trimmed the deficit to three at 21-18 following an April Rice kill, but Stony Brook answered with three straight points to reach set point at 24-18. Lanier then recorded a kill and a Seawolves attack error brought Elon within four at 24-20, but a service error on the next point gave Stony Brook a 25-20 victory and evened the match at 1-1.
- Elon scored the first two points of the third set, highlighted by a Palmer service ace, before Stony Brook answered with a 6-1 run to take a 6-3 advantage. The Seawolves continued to create separation and extended their lead to 12-6 following a Rayanne Wheat service ace. Caroline Smith stopped the run with a kill, but Stony Brook pushed the margin to eight at 15-7 before taking a 16-7 advantage out of the media timeout. The Phoenix began to chip away late, using a 5-1 run highlighted by a Rucker kill, two Rucker service aces and a Sewell kill to trim the deficit to 20-12. Elon later pulled within seven at 21-14 and again at 22-16, but Stony Brook held off the push and closed out the frame for a 25-19 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The fourth set remained close through the early stages, with Elon pulling even at 5-all on a Schultz-Rucker block. Stony Brook responded with four straight points to take a 9-5 advantage before the Phoenix worked back within three at 12-9. The Phoenix pulled within two at 13-11 and again at 15-13 following a Berlekamp kill, but the Seawolves took control with six unanswered points to build a 21-13 advantage. Schultz stopped the run with a kill, and Lanier later helped the Phoenix pull within seven at 23-16 with a kill and solo block. Stony Brook answered with the final two points, however, to earn a 25-16 victory and secure the match.
