Elon Clipped By Northeastern

Huskies Edge Phoenix With Second-Half Goal

BOSTON – The Elon women's soccer team (7-3-3, 2-2-1 CAA) fell 1-0 to Northeastern (5-5-3, 3-1-1 CAA) on Thursday night at Parsons Field to open a two-match trip against CAA North opponents.

The Phoenix outshot the Huskies, 20-11, on the night but could not solve reigning CAA Goalkeeper of the Year Eliza Teplow, who matched her career high with 11 saves in Northeastern's net.

It was just the second time in 13 matches this season Elon was held without a goal. Isa Murdock attempted a game-high eight shot attempts for the Phoenix.

How It Happened
  • Both teams attempted a shot in the opening 70 seconds of the match, with Gabby Tirado barely missing wide left on a shot created by a Grace Gelhaus cross.
  • Murdock put a long-range shot on target in the fifth minute that was secured by Teplow for her first save of the night.
  • Elon created its best first-half scoring chance in the 38th minute when Isabel DiPrima rolled a ball from the left side of the box past Teplow and toward the bottom right corner of the goal. A Northeastern defender cleared the ball off the goal line, but Tirado corralled it, putting another shot on target that Teplow controlled.
  • Teplow made a save on a Jessica Hill attempt in the closing moments of the first half as the match was scoreless entering halftime.
  • Naomi Person was called upon for the first time in the 54th minute. Ava Nace attempted a shot from long distance that tested Person's vertical, but the Phoenix goalkeeper rose to get a piece of the ball and deflect it off the cross bar for her first save of the contest.
  • Teplow denied a trio of quality Elon scoring chances in the 63rd minute to keep the Phoenix off the board. The initial two shots came from Murdock, the second of which required Teplow to dive to her left across the goal line to stop. Nicole Kleyner gained control of the rebound from that save and took a shot from just in front of the right post that Teplow again dove to deny.
  • Northeastern earned a corner opportunity in the 66th minute. After the Phoenix headed the initial cross away from the goal, Lucia Arcila fired a shot that was blocked by an Elon defender. However, Nicole Bartlett quickly put another shot on target that beat Person and found the top left corner for the first score of the night.
  • Murdock was stopped two more times by Teplow in the 74th and 79th minutes, respectively, on shots that deflected off Northeastern defenders and almost knuckled over the goal line.
  • Elon took four more shots over the final seven minutes of the contest, with Gelhaus taking the final Phoenix attempt of the night in the final minute, which missed high. The Huskies cleared the ball into Elon's end after an ensuing goal kick and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Notable Numbers
  • This was Elon's fourth match this season with 20 or more shot attempts and the first in CAA play.
  • Murdock, who led the CAA in shots per game entering Thursday, attempted eight shots to pace the Phoenix. Five of the shots were on target.
  • Tirado and Kleyner trailed Murdock with three shots each. Gelhaus had two shots of her own.
  • Murdock was one of three Phoenix field players to play all 90 minutes, along with Alexis Pierce and Ava Hellner.
  • Lauren McCauley made her first start of the campaign, playing the first 25 minutes of the contest.
  • Northeastern manufactured seven corner chances compared to Elon's three.
  • The loss snapped Elon's two-match winning streak over the Huskies at Parsons Field.
