Late Push Comes Up Short As Phoenix Falls At Charlotte

Baulsir Launches First Homer Of The Season

CHARLOTTE – Teagan Baulsir belted the first home run of the season for the Elon softball team, but the Phoenix fell short in its comeback attempt in a 5-3 setback to the Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.

The loss dropped the Phoenix to 0-4 on the season, while the 49ers improved to 4-2.

At the Plate
  • Baulsir was one of the Phoenix's four hits on the day, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate and accounting for Elon's first run with a solo homer in the fourth inning.
  • Kayla Wilson and Chloe Hatzopoulos also recorded hits, with Wilson adding a double and a walk to her stat line.

In the Circle
  • Chana Wolfe took the loss for Elon, falling to 0-3 on the season. The senior allowed three runs over 2.1 innings of work.
  • Anna Dew pitched 3.2 innings in relief, surrendering two earned runs while striking out two batters.

The Rundown
  • Charlotte jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Audrey Wilson connected on a three-run homer to right field, giving the 49ers a 3-0 advantage.
  • Elon responded in the top of the fourth as Baulsir launched her first round-tripper of the season. The Glen Allen, Va., native drove an 0-1 pitch to left field to put the Phoenix on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • The 49ers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an infield bunt single and a groundout to third base, extending their lead to 5-1 after four innings.
  • Elon trimmed the margin in the fifth inning following a Charlotte defensive miscue. A hit-by-pitch and a single by Hatzopoulos put two runners aboard before an errant throw by the second baseman allowed two runs to score, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
  • The Phoenix brought the tying run to the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings with two outs, but Charlotte was able to close out the contest and secure the 5-3 victory.

Notes
  • Baulsir's home run marked the second of her career, and she tied a career high with two hits.
  • Elon used the same starting lineup and pitcher for the second consecutive game.

On Deck
  • The Phoenix will host the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational this weekend, Feb. 12-15. The tournament field includes Mount St. Mary's, Manhattan and Dayton.
