WINSTON-SALEM – The Elon women's tennis team picked up an early morning victory Sunday, defeating George Washington at the Wake Forest Tennis Center, 6-1.
Simone Bergeron and
Mariana Reding clinched a tight doubles point with a win at No. 1 doubles before the Phoenix won five of six singles contests for its third consecutive triumph.
The Rundown
- Elon overcame early break deficits at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to secure the opening point.
- On Court 3, Lisa Kranec and Cornelia Kack were broken in the opening game but won five of the next six to take a commanding 5-2 advantage. The duo then broke serve in the final game to secure a 6-3 win, their team-best third of the spring.
- With George Washington winning on Court 2, the doubles point came down to Bergeron and Reding at the top spot. They went down a break early but battled their way back to level the score at 4-4. Trailing 0-30 on their own serve, Elon dug out of the hole for a hold and a 5-4 lead. The juniors then broke in the ensuing game to win 6-4 and put the Phoenix ahead, 1-0.
- Kack continued her torrid early season form in singles, dropping just five games in a 6-2, 6-3 win over George Washington's Madison Lee at the No. 2 spot. Kack has won three consecutive singles decisions in straight sets, losing just eight games combined.
- Kranec also notched her third singles victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-0 result on Court 4 versus Alexandra Lindqvist. It was the sophomore's 20th career dual singles win.
- Shortly after Kranec finished her match, Reding made it 4-0 for the Phoenix with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Victoria Sasinka at the No. 3 spot. The junior has also won three straight singles contests and has lost more than two games in just one of her last six sets.
- Madison Cordisco extended Elon's lead to 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Devika Manu on Court 6. It was the senior's second singles victory of the season with both coming via identical 6-2, 6-0 scorelines.
- On Court 5, Alexis Nyborg won a tightly contested affair against Karen Verduzco, 7-5, 7-5. Nyborg trailed 0-3 in the opening frame before completing a comeback and trailed 4-5 in the second and broke Verduzco while she was serving for the set. Nyborg became the fourth Elon player to secure a third straight singles win Sunday, as the junior now has a trio of wins at No. 5 singles on the campaign.
- Bergeron came from a set down to force a match tiebreak on Court 1, but could not complete her comeback bid, falling 5-10 to Solange Skeene.
- Elon has now won three consecutive matches, with two coming indoors.
