No. 14/20 Duke Defeats Phoenix

Klein And Settle Collect Hits For The Phoenix

ELON – The Elon softball team fell to No. 14/20 Duke, 13-1, on Tuesday at Hunt Softball Park.

The Phoenix moved to 1-8 on the season while the Blue Devils improved to 8-3. The victory also marked Duke's eighth straight win over Elon in the all-time series.

At the Plate
  • Elon was limited to two hits in the contest, coming from freshmen Jenna Klein and Emily Settle, who each went 1-for-1 at the plate.
  • Greta Hessenthaler drove in the Phoenix's lone run and was one of three Elon players to draw a walk against the Blue Devils.
In the Circle
  • Chana Wolfe was credited with the loss, falling to 0-5 on the year. The senior was one of four Phoenix pitchers to see action in the game.
  • Lia Miller threw a team-high two innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs. Anna Dew added an inning of work with one strikeout while surrendering one unearned run
The Rundown
Duke struck first in the top of the opening inning, pushing across two runs after placing a pair of runners on base to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Phoenix threatened in the bottom half of the first as Greta Hessenthaler and Lani Wyrick reached on walks with no outs, but a strikeout and a double play ended the inning without a run.

The Blue Devils extended their advantage in the second, plating five runs to build a 7-0 cushion. Duke continued to add on and carried a 13-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Elon broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth. Kayla Wilson led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Emily Settle followed with a single to advance Wilson to third before she came home on a one-out groundout for the Phoenix's lone run. A strikeout with a runner still in scoring position ended the game with the 13-1 final.

On Deck
The Phoenix travels to Florida State for the Dugout Classic, Feb. 20-22. Elon opens the tournament against Alabama on Friday at 10 a.m. and will also face Dartmouth and host Florida State as part of the four-game slate
