Elon Falls To No. 6/7 Seminoles In Dugout Classic Finale

Elon Goes 2-2 In Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 6/7 Florida State broke the game open early and defeated the Elon softball team, 9-1 in five innings, Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Dugout Club Classic at JoAnne Graf Field.

Elon (3-10) ended its three-day weekend 2-2 at the Seminole-hosted tournament, falling to nationally-ranked Alabama (No. 7/8) and Florida State (No. 6/7) while picking up back-to-back wins against Dartmouth.

At The Plate
  • Teagan Baulsir scored Elon's lone run of the contest in the fourth inning, doubling to right-center field before scoring three at-bats later on a batted ball by Marry Moss Wirt that was ruled a fielding error by the Florida State shortstop.
  • Greta Hessenthaler reached base twice, leading off the game with a walk while tagging a single in her next plate appearance.
  • Peyton Fitzpatrick picked up Elon's third hit of the day with an infield single in the fourth.

In The Circle
  • Two Phoenix saw action in the circle, including Chana Wolfe (0-7) and Lia Miller.
  • Miller held the Seminoles scoreless over the final 1.2 innings, stranding two baserunners in the third before tossing a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.

The Rundown
Elon and Florida State were scoreless after the opening frame as Wolfe stranded a pair of Seminoles with a swinging strikeout of Kennedy Harp in the bottom half. The Phoenix put a runner on base for the second straight inning to start the game when Wirt reached on an error in the top of the second, but the Maroon and Gold couldn't capitalize.

Florida State gained a commanding lead with nine runs on 10 hits across the second and third innings. Miller took over for Wolfe in the circle with one out and two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third and allowed just one hit before getting out of the jam with a groundout to third base.

Baulsir's third hit of the weekend – a double to the right-center gap – started off the fourth inning for Elon. The junior advanced to third base on a flyout to center field and then scored on a hard-hit ball up the middle by Wirt, which was originally ruled as a single before it was later changed to a fielding error by the Seminole shortstop. Fitzpatrick collected an infield single in the following at-bat to put two Phoenix on base, but a groundout ended the threat.

Miller tossed a 1-2-3 fourth inning in the circle before Florida State did the same in the top of the fifth, ending the contest.
