Phoenix Drops Midweek Contest Versus No. 11 Hokies

Hatzopoulos Tallies Seventh Multi-Hit Game Of The Season

ELON – The Elon softball team fell behind early before ultimately suffering a 14-2 setback versus No. 11 Virginia Tech in six innings on Wednesday at Hunt Softball Park.

The loss drops the Phoenix to 7-16 on the season while facing its fourth ranked opponent of the campaign. The Hokies improved to 21-2 and extended their winning streak to 15 games.

At the Plate
  • Chloe Hatzopoulos had two of the Phoenix's three hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 at the dish. It was the seventh multi-hit game for the redshirt senior and her fourth in the past five games.
  • Jenna Klein added the other hit for the Phoenix as the rookie went 1-for-3 at the plate. She drove in Elon's lone RBI of the night while adding a double to her stat line.
In the Circle
  • Chana Wolfe (0-10) took the loss in the circle for the Phoenix. The senior pitched 3.0 innings and allowed six runs on six hits.
  • Lia Miller tossed 2.2 innings in relief and allowed eight runs while striking out one. Abbie Gaynor recorded the final out of the sixth inning after relieving Miller.
The Rundown
The Hokies took an early lead in the top of the first. Virginia Tech scored on RBI off a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly to earn a 2-0 advantage.

Virginia Tech added four more runs in the top of the third. The Hokies scored on a pair of singles, a sacrifice fly and a double to take a 6-0 lead after the top half of the inning.

The Phoenix finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Elon saw its first two batters reach on walks before the lead runner scored on a Klein double to left-center. The Maroon and Gold plated another run on a wild pitch, trimming the deficit to 7-2.

After a relatively quiet fifth inning between both teams, the Hokies broke the game open with a seven-run top of the sixth, expanding their lead to 14-2. The Phoenix would get a runner on base in the home half, but it was for naught as the Hokies closed out the game with the win via run rule.

On Deck
The Phoenix welcomes Tarleton State and Lehigh this weekend for a three-game slate. Elon faces Tarleton State on Friday and Sunday while hosting the Mountain Hawks on Saturday.
