Elon Drops Match At No. 34 Clemson

Phoenix Falls 4-0 Despite Close Doubles Point

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Elon men's tennis team (3-8) suffered a 4-0 setback Sunday against No. 34 Clemson (7-10) at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.

The Phoenix pushed the Tigers in doubles, going ahead by an early break on Court 2 and coming within a point of winning at the No. 3 spot. Elon also played several tight opening sets in singles but could not put a point on the board.

The Rundown
  • Elon gave the Tigers all they could handle in doubles, with opportunities to win at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots after Clemson took the victory on Court 1.
  • On Court 2, Nick Fisk and Charles Pilet broke Clemson's duo of Henrik Bladelius and Marko Mesarovic in their opening service game. Leading 4-3, Fisk and Pilet dug saved a pair of Clemson break points to take a 5-3 lead. However, the Tigers broke the Elon while serving for the match at 5-4 and then held to go ahead 6-5. The Phoenix saved a pair of match points while serving in the ensuing game, but the Tigers converted the third to secure the doubles point.
  • Oskar Antinheimo and Rafael Ymer were on match point against Clemson's Matisse Farzam and Yannic Nittmann on Court 3 when the match was halted. Elon's duo went down an early break, but broke back to level the score at 4-4 and then won a deuce point in the next game to hold for 5-4. With Clemson serving trailing 6-5, Elon took a 40-30 lead in the 12th game to get to match point, but the match was halted when the Tigers wrapped up the doubles point with their win on Court 2.
  • Clemson took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win by Farzam over Nikola Parichkov on Court 3. Parichkov was broken in his opening service game of the match but immediately broke back to make it 2-1 for Farzam in the first set. Farzam rolled from there to double Clemson's lead.
  • Viktor Markov, the No. 48 player in the ITA singles rankings, stretched Clemson's lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 result against Ymer on Court 2. Ymer had a chance to get the first set back on serve, overcoming a 40-0 deficit in the final game to force deuce. However, Markov won the deuce point to take the set and broke early in the second on his way to victory.
  • The Tigers secured the match win with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph from Noa Vukadin on Court 1 against Veljko Krstic. Elon's top singles player broke in Vukadin's opening service game to go ahead 2-0, and after Vukadin went ahead by a break at 4-3, Krstic responded with another break to level the score, 4-4. Vukadin rebroke Krstic in the ensuing game before serving out the opening set. He then broke Krstic to start the second and went on to clinch the match for the Tigers.
  • The Phoenix also played tight opening sets at the Nos. 4-6 spots, with Alonso Roca pushing Nittmann to a 7-5 scoreline.
  • Four of Elon's eight losses this season have come against ITA ranked opponents, including three ACC losses.
 
Up Next
Elon will travel to face CAA foe William & Mary in Williamsburg on March 20. The match is scheduled for a noon start.
