The Rundown
Elon wasted no time getting into scoring position in the first inning. Wyrick led off the frame with a triple to right before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Murray to put the Phoenix on the board.
Â
Miscues from the Texans helped Elon add two more runs in the bottom of the second.
Jenna Klein and
Payton Swart both reached on errors before scoring on another error during
Mary Moss Wirt's at-bat to give the Phoenix a 3-0 lead.
Â
Tarleton State mounted a rally in the third. The Texans reached on a leadoff double and a hit-by-pitch before both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Miller limited the damage to a pair of sacrifice flies as Elon carried a 3-2 advantage into the fourth.
Â
A five-run bottom of the fourth broke the game open for the Phoenix. Elon used six hits to increase its lead with RBI from Gardner, Wyrick, Murray, Hatzopoulos and Klein as the Texans faced an 8-2 deficit after four innings.
Â
Hatzopoulos pushed across another run after the redshirt senior drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth. The free pass scored Wirt, who had reached earlier in the inning on a walk, giving Elon a 9-2 cushion.
Â
Dew held the Texans to one hit over the final two innings as Elon improved to 2-1 during its three-game weekend versus Tarleton State and Lehigh.
