ELON – After dropping the doubles point, the No. 72 Elon women's tennis team (9-3) responded against Connecticut (7-5) in singles, taking five of six points to complete a 5-2 comeback victory Thursday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
This was Elon's first win this season after dropping the doubles point, as the Phoenix stormed back with straight-set decisions on the top five singles courts to earn its second straight victory.
The Rundown
- The Huskies won on Courts 1 and 2 to take the doubles point.
- Elon started doubles with an emphatic 6-0 victory from Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec, who picked up their sixth straight win together and ninth of the spring. It was the duo's second 6-0 win of the season. The sophomores have not lost more than three games in any of their six consecutive victories.
- After UConn won at the No. 2 spot, the doubles point came down to the top court. Elon took an early 3-1 lead, but the Huskies battled back from there, winning 6-4 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
- This was the first time Elon has lost the doubles point since Feb. 17 at No. 3 North Carolina, snapping a streak of six straight for the Phoenix.
- The Phoenix put the first singles point on the board via a dominant 6-1, 6-0 result by Mariana Reding over Victoria Matos at the No. 3 spot. It was the sophomore's team-best 10th singles win of the spring and her seventh in a row. The performance matched her most efficient of the season, as she also dropped just one game in a win over NC Wesleyan.
- Simone Bergeron gave Elon a 2-1 advantage with a straight-set victory of her own on Court 2, as the sophomore defeated Chloe Lomans, 6-2, 6-3. It was Bergeron's first career win at the No. 2 spot after debuting there in Elon's last match at Furman. Bergeron has now won six singles matches this spring, all coming in straight sets.
- Elon moved within one point of victory after Alexis Nyborg completed a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 4 spot against Cameron Didion. Nyborg trailed 5-4 in the second set but rattled off the final three games to secure the victory. It was her seventh win of the spring and the second to come at the No. 4 position.
- The Huskies posted a singles win on Court 6 shortly after Nyborg finished to cut Elon's lead to 3-2.
- For the second straight match, Kack clinched a Phoenix victory, downing Ela Platenikova on Court 1, 7-5, 6-3. Kack is now 2-0 on the season at the No. 1 singles position. The sophomore has won six straight matches and is up to nine victories on the season, the second most on the Phoenix.
- In the final match to finish, Kranec battled past Madison Mcleod, 6-4, 7-6 (1) on Court 5. Kranec trailed 3-0 in the opening set but reeled off six of the final seven games to take the frame. The second set came down to a tiebreak, with Kranec winning the first five points on her way to a 7-1 breaker triumph. It was the sophomore's first singles victory since Feb. 25 against North Carolina A&T.
- The win was Elon's first after losing the doubles point in over a year since the Phoenix last did so on March 1, 2025, against South Carolina State.
- This was Elon's fourth time winning at Nos. 1-5 singles this season.
- The Phoenix improved to 8-1 at home with the win, bouncing back after losing its first home match last week against South Alabama.
- The win was Elon's first against a current Big East team.
