Big First Inning Downs Elon Versus Campbell

Phoenix Suffers First Series Sweep Since 2024

ELON – Behind a big-scoring opening frame by Campbell, the Elon softball team suffered a 14-5 setback in its CAA series finale on Sunday at Hunt Softball Park.

The Camels scored eight runs in the opening frame as Campbell (20-14, 7-2 CAA) completed its sweep over Elon (11-23, 5-4 CAA) in the three-game set. The Phoenix also suffered its first series sweep since 2024 at UNCW and its first at home since a series against James Madison in 2018.

At the Plate
  • The Phoenix posted its best scoring output of the weekend with five runs despite being limited to three hits. Elon also drew four walks and had another runner reach via hit-by-pitch.
  • Jenna Klein led the way, going 2-for-3 with both hits being doubles. She also drove in a season-high three RBI.
  • Lani Wyrick added the other hit for Elon, going 1-for-2. The sophomore drove in a run and scored twice.
In the Circle
  • Anna Dew (7-7) took the loss for Elon in the circle. She was one of three pitchers to see action along with Chana Wolfe and Kyra Leonard.
  • Leonard was effective in relief, tossing a career-best 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
The Rundown
Campbell jumped out early, plating eight runs in the opening frame, with much of the damage coming via bases-loaded singles. The outburst gave the Camels an 8-0 advantage before Elon came to bat.

Facing an early deficit, Elon answered with a run in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second and one out, Klein drove in Wyrick with an RBI double to left-center, putting two in scoring position. Campbell, however, induced a popup and a flyout to end the threat.

The Camels extended their lead in the second, adding four more runs on a pair of singles and a wild pitch to make it 12-1 after two innings.

Elon worked out of a jam in the fifth as Campbell loaded the bases with two outs, but the Phoenix recorded the final out on a fly ball to keep the deficit at 11.

The Phoenix offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth with help from the bench. Elon loaded the bases as pinch hitters Christina Piotrowski, Kayla Wilson and Julia Tamulski each drew walks. Another pinch hitter, Allie Dawson, drove in a run on a fielder's choice before Wyrick followed with an RBI single. Klein added two more runs with her second double of the afternoon as Elon cut the deficit to 12-5.

Campbell responded with two runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 14-5. Elon was retired in order in the bottom of the inning as the game ended via run rule.

On Deck
Elon returns to the road next weekend, April 3-5, at College of Charleston for its next CAA series.
