ELON – The No. 58 Elon women's tennis team (7-2) delivered its fourth straight sweep Sunday, brushing aside South Carolina State (0-5) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, 6-0.
Playing its first match as an ITA ranked team since 2015, the Phoenix picked up the doubles point and rolled to five straight-set victories in singles for its fourth consecutive win.
The Rundown
- Elon clinched the doubles point with wins at the top two spots.
- On Court 1, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding beat Ashikha Amalnathan and Valeria Teran of South Carolina State, 6-2. It was their sixth triumph of the season, tying them with Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec for the most by an Elon doubles tandem. The duo has won four consecutive outings together.
- Madison Cordisco and Alexis Nyborg clinched the opening point for the Phoenix with a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. It was their second win together this spring.
- Elon has now won four straight doubles point and improved to 7-0 this season when winning the doubles point.
- Kack picked up Elon's first singles victory, cruising past Amalnathan, 6-1, 6-0. It was the sophomore's sixth win of the spring, all of which have come at the No. 2 spot. Kack has now produced four 6-0 singles sets this spring.
- Cordisco bested Kack by a game, sweeping Iriela Rajaobelina 6-0, 6-0 on Court 5. It was Cordisco's 26th career dual singles victory, 16 of which have come at the No. 5 spot. It was the senior's fourth dual singles win without dropping a game.
- The winning point came from Bergeron, who posted a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Katerina Marsalkova at the top singles spot. The junior has won four straight singles matches and is up to 29 career victories.
- Reding delivered another straight-set decision for Elon, winning 6-1, 6-4 on Court 2 against Teran. Reding has also won four straight singles matches and leads the Phoenix with seven victories this spring.
- Nyborg tallied Elon's final win of the day, taking down Cassandra Leocanet, 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot. It was the junior's fifth win of the spring and the fourth to come in straight sets.
- The Phoenix has not dropped a match in its last four outings, going 17-0 in completed singles matches and 9-0 in finished doubles contests.
- Elon has won all 21 points in its last four outings.
- This is the first time the Phoenix has swept four straight matches since 2014.
