ELON – The Elon men's tennis team (5-11) rolled to a 6-1 Senior Day win Wednesday, defeating CAA foe Campbell (7-11) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center behind contributions from both its seniors.
After being recognized in a pre-match ceremony,
Oskar Antinheimo and
Veljko Krstic helped Elon take the doubles point, with Antinheimo clinching a 1-0 Elon lead with a win at the No. 2 spot. Antinheimo then delivered the winning point for the Phoenix in singles.
With the win, Elon improved to 2-0 on the season against conference opponents.
The Rundown
- The Phoenix secured a hard-fought doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots.
- In just their second match together, Jack Curtis and Veljko Krstic took down Campbell's top pair of Alex Fragasso and Max Hamon, 6-4. The Phoenix broke Campbell in its final service game to secure their first victory as a pair.
- Campbell answered with a win on Court 3.
- In the final match to finish on Court 2, Antinheimo and partner Rafael Ymer saved a trio of match points while trailing 4-5, overcoming a 15-40 deficit to hold for 5-5. The match went to a tiebreak, the second for Antinheimo and Ymer in their last three outings. The Phoenix duo raced out to a 5-0 lead held on for a 7-2 victory to secure the point for Elon. Antinheimo and Ymer are now 4-1 together this spring.
- The winning doubles point snapped a streak of three straight losing doubles points for the Phoenix. Elon has now won the doubles point in both its matches against CAA teams this spring after taking it against William & Mary on March 20.
- Nikola Parichkov wasted little time moving Elon ahead 2-0 with a clean sweep of Ethan Richardson on Court 5. Parichkov won 6-0, 6-0 for his fourth win of the spring, the first to come at the No. 5 spot. Parichkov has now dropped one or fewer games in two of his four wins this spring, as he also had a 6-1, 6-0 scoreline on March 7 against Georgia State.
- Elon got another point from Curtis at the No. 3 spot, as the junior defeated Aleksander Hudject 6-1, 6-2. It was his fifth singles win of the season and second to come at the No. 3 position.
- Antinheimo delivered the winning point for Elon with a 6-3, 6-0 win on Court 4 against Max Hamon. It was the senior's fifth victory of the season but the first to come in straight sets since March 13 against Coastal Carolina. Antinheimo has won four of his last six completed matches, with the two losses coming in third sets.
- Ymer split his first two sets on Court 2 but battled past Alex Fragasso in a match tiebreak to win 6-2, 4-6, 10-4. Ymer has now won five straight matches and leads the Phoenix with 12 victories this spring. It was the sophomore's second match tiebreak of the season.
- Charles Pilet put the final Elon point on the board, defeating Arush Gupra 7-6 (5), 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. Pilet won the final two points in the first set tiebreak to go up a set and then cruised through his second. It was Pilet's fourth win of the spring and the third to come at the No. 6 position.
- The Phoenix is now 2-0 against conference opponents this season with wins over Campbell and William & Mary. Elon won both matches, 6-1.
- Elon improved to 15-2 all-time against the Camels with the victory.
