Dew Dominates With Second Shutout Of The Weekend

ELON – Behind junior Anna Dew's second shutout of the weekend, the Elon softball team claimed its CAA series over Hampton with an 8-0 victory in the rubber match Sunday afternoon at Hunt Softball Park.

Dew notched her fourth shutout of the season with a complete-game performance for the Phoenix (13-27, 7-8 CAA). The win also marked Elon's second run-rule victory of the weekend over the Pirates (9-27, 3-15 CAA) as the maroon and gold rebounded from its game two setback Saturday.

  • Dew earned the win to improve to 9-9 on the season. The Harrisburg, N.C., native allowed two hits over 6.0 innings while striking out eight.
  • Her strikeout total increased to 109 on the year, moving her into eighth place all-time for a single season in the program's Division I era.

Elon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After the first two batters were retired, Klein reached on an infield single to extend the frame. She scored on a Hatzopoulos double to left center. Hatzopoulos later came home on a Baulsir RBI single to left center.

The Phoenix added three runs in the second. Murray led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Camacho followed with a single to shallow right, and an errant throw allowed Murray to score while Camacho advanced to second. Camacho moved to third on a dropped third strike as Hessenthaler reached, and Wyrick was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Klein drove in Camacho on a fielder's choice, though Hessenthaler was tagged out on the play. Wyrick advanced to third and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Hatzopoulos, extending the lead to 5-0.

Elon loaded the bases again in the third. Payton Swart, Murray and Camacho each drew walks before Hessenthaler earned a fourth consecutive free pass to bring in another run, making it 6-0.

After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Elon added two runs in the sixth on bases-loaded walks to complete the 8-0 run-rule victory.
