Phoenix Drops Rubber Match at Campbell

Hatzopoulos Hits Fourth Homer Of The Season In Setback

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Elon softball team fell in its rubber match contest at Campbell, 9-1, on Sunday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Chloe Hatzopoulos hit her fourth homer of the season and the 30th of her career, but Elon (14-29, 8-10 CAA) dropped its fifth game of the season to the Camels (28-18, 14-4 CAA).

At the Plate
  • Hatzopoulos had two of the Phoenix's four hits in the contest, going 2-for-3. She becomes the fourth player in school history with 30 or more career home runs.
  • Payton Swart and Mauri Murray also recorded base hits for the Phoenix. Swart also reached base on a pair of walks.
In the Circle
  • Anna Dew took the loss for the Phoenix, falling to 10-10. The junior pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
The Rundown
The Phoenix looked to strike first in the top of the second. Mary Moss Wirt reached on a one-out walk and moved to second on a single from Payton Swart. Mauri Murray followed with a single to right, and Wirt attempted to score from second but was tagged out at home for the second out after the relay throw. A flyout ended the inning with two runners stranded.

Elon worked out of a jam in the bottom of the third. The Camels led off the inning with a single and then moved to second on a passed ball. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third with one out and the heart of the order due up, but Dew retired the next two batters on a flyout and a strikeout.

Campbell broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. The Camels loaded the bases with no outs before scoring on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. The Phoenix recorded the next two outs to strand runners but trailed heading into the fifth.

A couple of Phoenix miscues led to Campbell adding to its lead in the fifth. The leadoff batter reached on a single and moved to second when Elon could not convert a double play, committing an error. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position before a groundout plated a run. Campbell added two more runs on an RBI triple and another Elon error to take a 4-0 advantage.

The Phoenix got a run back in the top of the sixth. Hatzopoulos led off the inning with a solo home run, trimming Elon's deficit to 4-1.

Campbell answered with a five-run bottom of the sixth, clinching the series with a 9-1 victory and its second run-rule win of the weekend.

On Deck
The Phoenix hosts Stony Brook for its final regular-season home series, April 24-26. Elon will also celebrate Senior Day next Sunday.
