Elon Battles To Road Win At William & Mary

Nyborg Secures First Ever Phoenix Victory Over Tribe In Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In their first meeting since last season's CAA championship match, the Elon women's tennis team (12-3) edged William & Mary (12-6) on Friday, winning 4-3 in a dramatic battle at the Mackesy Tennis Center.

Alexis Nyborg delivered the winning point for the Phoenix, coming through in a third-set tiebreak on Court 4 to give Elon a 4-2 advantage. Elon won the doubles point and got additional singles victories from Mariana Reding and Cornelia Kack to earn its second CAA road win of the campaign.

The win was Elon's first ever against the Tribe in Williamsburg, as the Phoenix had dropped its five previous visits.

The Rundown
  • Elon secured the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots.
  • On Court 1, Reding and Simone Bergeron were broken in their opening service game by Sia Chaudry and Francesca Davis but immediately broke back to level the contest at 1-1. After trading holds with the Tribe, Elon's top duo won a deuce point to hold for a 5-4 lead and then broke in the ensuing William & Mary service game to deliver a Phoenix win. It was their ninth victory of the spring and their second against a conference opponent.
  • With William & Mary winning on Court 2, the doubles point came down to the No. 3 spot. Kack and Lisa Kranec broke serve to go ahead 5-3 against Tilda Larsson and Yaelle Vaissaud, allowing Kranec to serve out the match in the 10th game as the Phoenix took the doubles point. It was the eighth straight victory for the Kack and Kranec pairing, which leads the Phoenix with 11 wins this spring.
  • Reding quickly moved Elon ahead 2-0 with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 victory on Court 3 over Larsson. The junior extended her singles winning streak to 10 as she picked up her 13th victory of the spring. It was the seventh straight match for Reding with a 6-1 set win and her fifth straight victory in straight sets. She is now 3-0 against CAA opponents on the season, with wins against Charleston and William & Mary in the last two outings.
  • The Tribe got its first point with a win at No. 2 singles. Davis won the final three games of the second set to defeat Bergeron, 6-1, 7-5.
  • Kack brought Elon's lead back to two points with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Chaudry at the top spot. Kack broke early in both sets and broke again in the eighth game of the second frame to secure the win. The sophomore took her own winning streak to eight matches as she won her 11th match of the season. Like Reding, Kack is also 3-0 against conference opponents this spring after also winning last time out against Charleston.
  • William & Mary won on Court 6 with Ale Gonzalez-Galino taking down Madison Cordisco, 6-1, 7-5. Gonzalez-Galino won the final three games in the second set to trim Elon's lead to 3-2.
  • Needing one of the final two matches, Elon turned to Kranec and Alexis Nyborg to deliver the winning point. Nyborg split her first two sets on Court 4 against Mira Kernagis, while Kranec fought back after dropping the first to force a decider at the No. 5 spot against Rebeka Svabikova.
  • Nyborg won a deuce point early in her third set to hold for 2-2 and had break points in back-to-back Kernagis service games that she could not take as the score went to 4-4. In the ninth game, Nyborg overcame a 40-0 hole, winning four straight points to break and take control of the match. However, Kernagis broke back in the next game to tie the set at 5-5 and then held for a 6-5 lead.
  • In the final game of the set, Nyborg held serve to take the contest into a tiebreak. Nyborg won four of the first five points to take early command, but Kernagis clawed back to within one at 4-3, 5-4 and then 6-5. On her second match point, Nyborg converted to take the tiebreak 7-5 and secure the winning point for the Phoenix.
  • The win was Nyborg's ninth of the season and the first to come in a full third set. The junior won tiebreaks in the first and third sets to improve to 4-1 in breakers this spring.
  • The Tribe won the final singles match on Court 5.
  • The win was Elon's first in Williamsburg in six tries. The previous three matches between the teams played at William & Mary had all been decided by a 4-3 or 5-2 score.
  • Elon is now 3-0 against CAA opponents this season with wins over North Carolina A&T, College of Charleston and William & Mary. The Charleston and William & Mary victories both came on the road.
  • For the first time in the head-to-head, Elon has won three straight matches against the Tribe.
  • This was Elon's first victory to come by a 4-3 scoreline this season. The last time the Phoenix won 4-3 was against William & Mary last year in the regular season.
