Phoenix Falls On Walk-Off At Charleston

Elon Records 10 Hits In Sunday Setback

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Elon softball team suffered its second walk-off defeat of the weekend, falling 4-3 at College of Charleston in its CAA series finale on Sunday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (20-21, 10-5 CAA) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure their first series sweep of the Phoenix (11-26, 5-7 CAA) since 2009. Elon also saw its losing streak extend to eight games with the setback.

At the Plate
  • The Phoenix had its best offensive output of the weekend, recording 10 hits. Mary Moss Wirt and Jenna Klein both went 3-for-4 to pace Elon at the plate, with Klein adding a pair of RBI.
  • Teagan Baulsir hit her third home run of the season, while Greta Hessenthaler drew a pair of walks.
In the Circle
  • Anna Dew was credited with the loss after entering in relief in the bottom of the sixth, falling to 7-9 on the year. The junior allowed one earned run and struck out two in 1.2 innings.
  • Starter Chana Wolfe allowed one run over 5.0 innings with one strikeout.
The Rundown
Both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings. Wolfe retired the first two batters in the bottom of the fourth, but a two-out solo home run gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

Elon responded with a three-run top of the fifth. Baulsir tied the game at 1-1 with a leadoff solo home run. The Phoenix continued to apply pressure, putting runners on the corners with one out after a fielder's choice by Lani Wyrick. An infield single by Mary Moss Wirt then loaded the bases for Klein as she stepped into the box.

Klein drove the first pitch she saw into left-center, bringing home two runs and giving Elon a 3-1 lead. The Phoenix offense was slowed down for the rest of the frame before turning over to the sixth.

The Cougars trimmed the deficit in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 3-2. Elon threatened again in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs on a pair of singles and a walk, but a flyout ended the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Elon recorded the first two outs but could not secure the evasive third putout. Charleston extended the inning with a pair of walks before scoring the go-ahead runs on a Phoenix error, sealing a 4-3 walk-off victory.
