ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 74 Elon women's tennis team (16-5) saw its stellar season come to end Saturday following a 4-0 loss to No. 31 Charlotte (23-4) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.
The two-time defending CAA champion Phoenix won its first three NCAA Tournament sets in singles after playing a tight doubles point. However, the 49ers staved off Elon to advance to the second round in the Athens Regional.
The Rundown
- The 49ers took the doubles points with victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots.
- On Court 1, Charlotte's No. 41 ranked duo of Ni Xi and Sara Suchankova defeated Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding.
- Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec went up an early break on Court 3 against Prisca Abbas and Yelyzaveta Chainykova, racing out to a 4-2 advantage. However, Charlotte rallied back to win 6-4 and secure a 1-0 lead for the 49ers.
- Elon's No. 2 duo of Madison Cordisco and Alexis Nyborg lost the first three games of their match against Shona Nakano and Andrea Chacon but reeled off the next four games, going from two breaks down to back on serve. The Phoenix tandem led 5-4 when the match was abandoned.
- The Phoenix won its first singles sets in an NCAA Tournament match on Courts 4 and 5, with Kranec and Nyborg both winning their second sets in quick succession. Both matches went unfinished during final frames.
- Charlotte stretched its lead to 2-0 with a victory at the No. 2 spot and went up 3-0 with another win on Court 3.
- While Kack was wrapping up Elon's third set victory of the day on Court 1, winning her second set against Xi, Charlotte clinched the match win a win at the No. 6 spot.
- This was Elon's third NCAA Tournament appearance and second in a row. The three victorious singles sets were the first by the Phoenix in an NCAA Tournament match.
- The Phoenix lost both its matches to Charlotte this season, with the other defeat coming in the season opener. The 49ers will move on to the second round of the Athens Regional to face either No. 1 Georgia or Alabama State.
