Phoenix Picks Up Point Against Charleston

Elon Controls Second Half In 1-1 Tie

ELON – The Elon men's soccer team (3-2-2, 1-1-2 CAA) picked up another point in the CAA South Division standings Saturday, tying College of Charleston (4-1-2, 1-1-1 CAA) in a 1-1 decision at Rudd Field.

Charleston scored in the opening 10 minutes of the contest to take an early lead, but Elon took control of the match in the second half. Dominik Renz scored an equalizer for the Phoenix in the 60th minute.

The match featured 17 combined shots, with Elon attempting nine. Drew Hartman made three stops in goal in his return to Elon's net.

The tie was Elon's second in CAA play this season. Both the Phoenix's CAA home matches have resulted in 1-1 draws.
 


How It Happened
  • The Cougars scored in the eighth minute off a corner kick opportunity.
  • Jordin Wilson put a shot on target in the 21st minute, forcing Charleston goalkeeper Marten Brink to make a save. Wilson took another shot in the 37th minute that missed the goal.
  • Hartman made a save of his own in the 39th minute. It was his second stop of the period.
  • Daire McCarthy put one more Elon attempt on target in the 44th minute that was handled by Brink. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • After controlling possession in the early stages of the second half, the Phoenix leveled the score on its first shot attempt of the period. Renz received the ball from Oscar Tonidandel just outside the Charleston box before curving the ball into the top left corner of the goal for the tying tally.
  • Renz almost had a brace in the 67th minute when a shot from point blank range was turned away from a sprawling Brink.
  • The final 20 minutes of the match featured just three shot attempts, with all three missing the target.
 
Notable Numbers
  • Renz's goal was his third of the campaign and his second in conference play. He now has points in three straight matches.
  • This is the second straight season Renz scored against the Cougars at Rudd. He was Elon's lone goal scorer in a 1-0 home victory for the Phoenix over Charleston in 2025.
  • Tonidandel's assist was his team-best fourth of the season. The midfielder has an assist in three straight matches, the longest streak by an Elon player since Renz last November.
  • Renz and Wilson paced Elon with two shot attempts each.
  • Magnus Jacobsen, Daire McCarthy and Tønnes Daland all went the full 90 minutes for the Phoenix.
  • Hartman made three stops in goal for the Phoenix. He has now started all four of Elon's CAA matches this season.
  • Elon is now 8-1-4 in its last 13 matches against the Cougars. The teams will square off again on Oct. 10 in Charleston.
  • The Phoenix is up to five points in the CAA standings halfway through its conference slate. Elon's next three matches are against nonconference opponents.
 
Up Next
Elon heads to Davidson for a nonconference clash on Sept. 22. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
