ELON – The Elon women's soccer team (6-1-2, 1-0-0 CAA) posted its fourth consecutive shutout Sunday night in a 2-0 victory over Campbell (3-5-2, 0-1-0 CAA) in its CAA opener at Rudd Field.
Elon limited the Camels to just six shot attempts with
Naomi Person anchoring a clean sheet in goal. The Phoenix is yet to allow a goal in the month of September with a shutout streak of over 385 minutes of game action.
Following a scoreless first half,
Megan Dwyer netted the first goal of the match in the 57th minute before
Jess Beck added an insurance tally in the 89th minute.
Talia Feigin,
Grace Gelhaus and
Talia Feigin all found the scoresheet with assists.
How It Happened
- Gelhaus took the game's first shot in the third minute, missing the target.
- In the sixth minute, Person was called into action in Elon's net. She rose up to stop a high shot that was dipping below the crossbar for her first save of the contest. Person made another stop in the 19th minute.
- The Phoenix attempted four straight shots to close out the first half. Jordan Green and Isa Murdock both put a shot on target during that stretch, but the match remained scoreless entering halftime.
- Person made another save in the 53rd minute on the first shot attempt of the second half by either team.
- Elon earned a corner kick opportunity in the 57th minute after a Gia Milano shot was saved. Gelhaus played a short ball off the corner to Feigin, who sent the ball from outside the 18-yard box toward the net. Dwyer stuck out her foot as the ball approached the goal line, making a soft touch to deflect it past Campbell's goalkeeper for the first goal of the night.
- Person made another save in the 75th minute to keep the Camels off the scoreboard.
- In the match's dying minutes, the Phoenix tacked on a second goal to double its lead. Tirado stole the ball from Campbell near midfield and made a run alongside Beck deep into Camels' territory. As Campbell's goalkeeper crept forward off the goal line, Tirado crossed the ball to Beck, who deposited an Elon goal.
- The Phoenix closed out its clean sheet and victory in the final minute.
Notable Numbers
- With the victory, Elon is now unbeaten in its last 12 matches at Rudd Field, a streak that began with last year's season opener.
- Dwyer's goal was the third of her career and her first of the season. All three of Dwyer's goals have come in CAA matches.
- Dwyer became Elon's 15th different goal scorer this season. Of the 24 Phoenix field players to log minutes this season, 63-percent have scored at least one goal.
- Beck netted her second goal of the season and first since Elon's win over South Carolina State on Aug. 20. The junior forward played 18 reserve minutes for the Phoenix.
- Feigin and Gelhaus remained tied for the team lead in assists as both notched a helper on Dwyer's tally. Both seniors have five assists and seven points on the campaign. Gelhaus now has an assist in four of her last five appearances.
- With her assist on Beck's goal, Tirado remains second on the Phoenix with eight points on the season. The junior has either scored or assisted in four of Elon's last six outings.
- Elon outshot Campbell on the night, 10-6. Gelhaus and Murdock paced the Phoenix with two shot attempts apiece.
- Alexis Pierce and Jessica Hill both went the full 90 minutes on Elon's back line, with Dwyer playing 87 minutes. In total, 18 different Phoenix saw action.
- Alexis Gordon started on the Phoenix back line and played a season-high 55 minutes.
- Person stopped four Campbell shots for the first solo shutout of her career. Person has shared three other clean sheets with Anica Carpenter this season.
- Elon has not allowed a goal since Aug. 30 against High Point. Over the course of its four-match shutout streak, Elon's defense has conceded just 29 shot attempts.
- The Phoenix has now won four of its five home meetings against the Camels.
- The win gives Elon its first three points in the CAA South Division standings.
