HAMPTON, Va. – The Elon volleyball team earned a CAA straight-set victory over Hampton, 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-11), on Thursday evening at the Convocation Center.

Cameron Lanier paced the Elon (4-9, 1-2 CAA) offense with a match-high 11 kills while hitting .250. She also added 10 digs, two service aces and two total blocks. Allie Schultz finished with eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage and added three block assists, while Anna Sewell also recorded eight kills and hit .462.

Catherine Rucker contributed five kills on nine attacks for a .333 hitting percentage and added three service aces, a solo block and three block assists. Caroline Berlekamp also finished with five kills and three total blocks. April Rice and Kayla Palmer each dished out 15 assists, while Casey Brower and Lindsey Murphy added seven digs apiece. Elon finished with eight total team blocks and nine service aces.

Hampton (2-10, 0-3) was led by Katerina Pappa with eight kills, followed by Racquel Frazier with seven. The Pirates hit .054 as a team, recording 24 kills against 19 attack errors.

Elon hit .357 for the match, including .364 in the second set and a dominant .467 in the third, when the Phoenix recorded 15 kills with only one attack error. Elon also held advantages in kills (41-24), service aces (9-3) and total blocks (8-5).

THE RUNDOWN

The Phoenix fell behind 6-2 early in the opening set before a Catherine Rucker solo block stopped the Hampton run. Elon continued to chip away at the deficit, using consecutive kills from Caroline Berlekamp and Cameron Lanier to pull within two, 11-9. After the Pirates pushed their advantage back to four at 14-10, the Phoenix responded with four unanswered points, highlighted by a Kayla Palmer service ace and an Allie Schultz kill, to tie the frame at 14-all. Hampton carried a 15-14 lead into the media timeout, but Elon answered and eventually moved ahead 18-16 following a Rucker service ace and an Anna Sewell kill. The Phoenix then used a 4-1 run to extend its advantage to 22-18, with Sewell adding another kill and Berlekamp contributing a solo block. Elon reached set point at 24-18 and, after Hampton fought off two set points, a Pirates service error closed out the frame for a 25-20 Phoenix victory.
The teams traded points throughout the early portion of the second set before Elon began to create separation. With the frame tied at 9-all, the Phoenix used a 6-2 run highlighted by a Lanier kill, a Palmer service ace and an Schultz kill to take a 15-11 advantage into the media timeout. Hampton pulled within two at 15-13, but Elon answered with five straight points to extend its lead to 20-13, with Lanier adding a service ace and Schultz and Rucker combining on a block during the run. After the Pirates briefly stopped the surge, the Phoenix closed the frame on a 5-0 run. Rucker delivered back-to-back service aces before Sewell added a kill, and a Hampton attack error finished off a 25-14 Elon victory.
The teams traded the first six points of the third set before Elon began to take control. With the frame tied at 3-all, the Phoenix scored three straight points behind a Lanier kill, a Schultz-Rucker block and a Lanier service ace to take a 6-3 advantage. Hampton pulled within two at 6-4, but Elon responded with a 5-0 run to build an 11-4 lead, forcing a Pirates timeout. The Phoenix continued to pull away and carried a 15-6 advantage into the media timeout following a Murphy service ace. Elon extended the lead to 18-6 behind a Lanier solo block and consecutive kills from the senior. With the outcome in hand, several Phoenix reserves contributed down the stretch, including kills from Ellie Hunt, Camryn Kanell and Caroline Smith. Kanell's kill gave Elon set point at 24-11 before Smith closed out the sweep with a kill for the 25-11 victory.
