Mike Nall re-joined the Elon University football program ahead of the 2019 season and will begin his sixth season back as the team’s special teams assistant in 2024, working specifically with the kickers, punters and long snappers.
Â
Elon’s kickers and punters have proven to be some of the best in the country year-after year. In 2023, true freshman Jack Berkowitz replaced the country’s best kicker in Skyler Davis and hardly skipped a beat. He was named a Freshman All-American by FCS Football Central and Phil Steele after making 12-of-15 field goals, ranking in the top 25 nationally in field goal percentage and field goals made per game. He made his first career field goal attempt, a 28-yarder at Wake Forest, and finished 2023 with six straight field goals made.
Â
Punter Kyle Romenick ranked No. 25 nationally with a 42.1 yard per punt average, becoming the second straight punter in back-to-back years to rank in the top 25 in punting average.
Nall's specialists were some of the best in the country in 2022 as kicker Skyler Davis was named an All-American by Walter Camp, the AFCA, Stats Perform, the Associated Press and FCS ADA. Davis tied the FCS record by making seven field goals of at least 50 yards on the season. Davis broke the school record for longest field goal in Elon history at 53 yards and set the program's career field goal record by making 69 during his time in the maroon and gold. Punter Jeff Yurk broke Elon's single-season punting average record at 44.1 yards per punt and was named a Sophomore All-American by HERO Sports. Both Davis and Yurk were named All-CAA.
Prior to the record-breaking 2022 season, Nall still had his imprint on the specialists as Hunter Stephenson set the previous punting average record in the spring of 2021 at 43.4 yards per punt. He led the CAA in punting and was named first team all-conference. His 40.9 career average ranked second in program history.
Â
In the fall of 2021, Skyler Davis was one of the top kickers in the country, making 17-of-22 field goals. He tied the school record with five in one game, tied the school record with a long of 52 yards, and became the first player in program history to make two 50-yarders in a single game.
Nall previously spent time at Elon from 2005-08 on Pete Lembo’s staff in a similar capacity. In his first stint with the Phoenix, Nall worked with three-time All-Southern Conference punter Brandon Lane, who still holds Elon’s career punting average record, and two-time All-SoCon kicker Andrew Wilcox. Working with Nall during his career, Wilcox earned All-America accolades as a senior and has since been inducted to the Elon Sports Hall of Fame while still holding multiple program kicking records.
Before coming back to Elon, Nall spent time as a coach at local high schools, including Cummings and Williams. Nall joined the staff at Cummings after the 2008 season and served as the team’s special teams coordinator and running backs coach. There, he coached Johnathon Watlington, who was a four-time All-Mid State 2A selection and the 2010 conference and regional Player of the Year. He also coached All-Region kickers Jose Garcia and Carlos Beltran, of which Garcia is the leading scorer in Cumming history.
Before his first stint at Elon, Nall was the tight ends and special teams coach at Williams under Hall of Fame coach Sam Story. With the Bulldogs, he helped the team reach the 2003 state quarterfinals before advancing to the 3A state championship game one year later in 2004.Â
A Burlington native, Nall attended Cummings High and was a three-sport letterman in football, baseball and basketball. He later went on to play football at NC State for Hall of Famer Lou Holtz and graduated in 1977 with a degree in textile technology.
Nall and his wife, Beth, reside in Elon.Â
