Former Elon football player Mitch Rippy is in his second stint as a volunteer assistant with his alma mater. Rippy will work with the Phoenix’s specialists this season.
In 2015, Rippy helped punter David Petroni to third-team All-CAA Football accolades after he averaged 41.3 yards per punt and booted 10 balls 50 or more yards. Petroni also picked up one league special teams player of the week nod.
During the 2013 season, Rippy led a talented pair of freshmen in Petroni and kicker John Gallagher. Petroni was a SoCon All-Freshman Team selection after averaging 42.1 yards per punt, booting 14 punts 50 or more yards and placing 33 punts inside the 20. Gallagher connected on two field goals of 40+ yards and ended the season by being successful on 12 of his final 15 field goals attempts.
In 2007, Rippy coached Elon kicker Andrew Wilcox to make 79 consecutive PATs. He also helpd Adam Shreiner become the program’s all-time leader in PAT’s during the 2012 season.
At Elon, he played as a kicker for its 1976, 1977 and 1978 football teams. Rippy currently ranks fourth among all-time program leaders at Elon with 102 career PATs and is tied for fifth with 24 career field goals.
At the conclusion of his career, Rippy was the program’s all-time leader in career PATs and tied as the all-time leader in career field goals. His 52-yard field goal against Gardner-Webb in 1977 is still tied for the longest Elon field goal ever.
He was a member of the 2011 Elon Sports Hall of Fame class.
Rippy and his wife Lisa have two sons – Macon and Garrett.
