Will Roberson

Will Roberson is in his fourth season as an assistant coach at Elon, having joined Coach Matt Matheny’s staff in June 2009.

“Will is a guy I’ve grown up with, in a sense, in the business,” Matheny said. “I have known him for 19 years as a camper, a manager and as a fellow assistant coach. Will is smart, very knowledgeable about all aspects of a program and has great basketball savvy. We are fortunate to have Will on our staff.”

At Elon, Roberson has been essential in the rebuilding efforts of the Phoenix program.  His work in recruiting has helped the maroon and gold secure talented and impactful freshman classes every season since he arrived on campus.

Roberson has a wealth of basketball experience ranging from the high school level to the Atlantic Coast Conference. He came to Elon after spending a year as an assistant coach at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. During his time with the Eagles, Roberson was responsible for producing and presenting detailed scouting reports on all opponents while also assisting the head coach with the team’s overall strategy. In addition to his scouting and on-court coaching duties, Roberson was heavily involved in the recruiting process. He helped Emory land a five-man recruiting class including players from North Carolina, New Jersey, Illinois and Australia.

Prior to his stint at Emory, Roberson served as the graduate assistant coach for the Clemson University men’s basketball team during the 2006-07 season. The Tigers were the country’s final unbeaten team that season, opening the campaign with 17 straight victories en route to a school-record 25 wins and a trip to the championship game of the NIT in New York City. While on staff, Roberson coordinated Clemson’s film exchange and recruiting research efforts.

In 2005-06, Roberson was the Head of Basketball at Frederica Academy in St. Simons Island, Ga. He directed the entire basketball program while also coaching the varsity boys’ team to a third place finish in GISA Region 2AA play.

Roberson also spent three seasons as the Director of Basketball Operations at Davidson College, his alma mater, from 2002-05. During his time at Davidson, the Wildcats won three consecutive regular-season Southern Conference championships and advanced to the third round of the post-season NIT in 2004-05. Roberson’s responsibilities included preparing scouting reports, on-campus recruiting, academic advising and serving as the co-director of Bob McKillop’s Basketball Camp.

“Elon is the rare kind of place that the more you learn about it, the better it gets. With a beautiful campus, updated facilities, and a wide range of academic offerings, the sky is the limit for Elon University and Elon basketball.

Roberson served as the head manager for the men’s basketball program during his undergraduate years at Davidson and spent his high school days competing at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Va., for the legendary Paul Hatcher, the all-time winningest coach in the state of Virginia. He is married to the former Erica Madden.
