Alex Smyth

Alex Smyth begins his first season at Elon as a volunteer assistant for head cross country coach Christine Engel and the men’s and women’s cross country programs.
 
Smyth arrives after being a member of the coaching staff at the Science of Speed coaching company and at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Fla. At the Science of Speed, Smyth assisted in the recruitment of clients while teaching them form and technique in regards to running, cycling and swimming.
 
Smyth also spent the 2010-11 season as a member of the Florida State men’s cross country team that captured the ACC title and was the NCAA runner-up at the cross country championships. He also competed for the Seminoles’ men’s track and field program that won the ACC league title.
 
Prior to his arrival at Florida State, Smyth competed at Eastern Washington from 2007-10 and was the team captain from 2009-10. During his career with the Eagles, Smyth was an eight-time All-Academic Big Sky Conference honoree and a two-time All-Big Sky Conference selection for cross country and in the 1,500-meters.
 
A native of Sequim, Wash., Smyth graduated from Eastern Washington with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and earned his master’s in sports management from Florida State in 2012.
