Chris Dockrill, a 2014 Elon Sports Hall of Fame inductee and former All-American for the Phoenix men’s golf program, is in his 25th season at the helm of the Elon women’s golf program in 2025-26.
Dockrill has guided the Phoenix women to a wealth of success over two and a half decades with more than 25 tournament victories and 21 top-five finishes at conference championship events. He has twice been named conference coach of the year (Big South Conference, 2000; Southern Conference, 2007). The Phoenix has excelled in the classroom under Dockrill as well with 27 student-athletes earning All-America Scholar honors 54 total times since 2000.
Dockrill’s tenure has also coincided with Elon opening the W. Cecil Worsley III Golf Training Center, which serves as the headquarters for both the men’s and women’s golf programs, in 2009.
The center will receive $3 million in upgrades, making it one of the finest golf facilities in college golf.
In Elon’s 11 completed seasons as a Coastal Athletic Association member (2014-25), Dockrill has led the Phoenix to 11 event titles – 10 stroke-play tournaments and one match-play event – and 52 top-five finishes.
The Phoenix was an immediate competitor in the CAA in its first year as a conference member (2014-15), finishing second at the conference championship after winning three tournaments (William & Mary Invitational, UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic and FGCU Eagle Invitational). Dockrill mentored a program-record three all-conference golfers – Kelsey Badmaev, Sunna Vidisdottir and Heather Munro – all of which earned second-team honors. Munro became the first golfer in program history to be named conference rookie of the year.
Munro continued to emerge as a key face for the Phoenix under Dockrill’s mentorship, becoming one of just two Elon women’s golfers to earn all-conference honors four times during the NCAA Division I era, joining teammate Kelsey Badmaev.
Seven Phoenix have earned All-CAA honors 13 total times since Elon joined the league in 2014-15.
In Elon’s 11 seasons (2003-14) as a member of the Southern Conference, Dockrill’s golfers collected All-SoCon accolades 13 times in addition to three student-athletes collecting All-Freshman distinctions. The 2006-07 season – in which Dockrill won his second career conference coach of the year honor – saw Elon win a pair of tournaments at the Sea Trails Intercollegiate and Lady Monarch Invitational along with a fifth-place finish at the SoCon Championship. The Phoenix finished among the top five at the SoCon Championship eight times in 11 seasons, including a runner-up effort in 2005 and back-to-back third-place finishes in 2008 and 2009.
Dockrill’s squads finished fourth or better at the Big South Championship in each of its four years as a conference member (1999-2003). He was honored as the 2000 Big South Coach of the Year as the Fightin’ Christians took fourth place in the conference championship behind the play of Beth Frace, who was later inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 alongside Dockrill.
Prior to taking leadership of the Elon women’s golf program, Dockrill spent two seasons as the assistant coach for the men’s program under legendary head coach Bill Morningstar, who he played for as a two-year member of the program (1984-86). Dockrill earned both All-America and Academic All-America honors following his senior year in 1986. He led the Elon men to a fourth-place finish at the 1986 NAIA National Tournament, where he placed fifth individually.
Dockrill, a native of Nova Scotia, Canada, played in the Canadian Amateurs from 1982-83. His illustrious golf career took flight in 1979 when he was crowned the Canadian National 16 & Under champion.
Dockrill graduated from Elon in 1986. He’s married to the former Theresa Brosnan of Rockville, Maryland. They have two daughters, Heather and Claire, and a son, Jack.
