Matt Ford joined the Elon coaching staff in February of 2023 as a tight ends coach. He spent 2022 as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Averett, where he mentored two all-conference offensive linemen and recruited Charlotte, Raleigh and South Carolina.
In 2024, Ford helped develop two tight ends into every down players. Cody Hardy and later in the season Dylan Magazu, earned their share of reps and accolades at the tight end position. Magazu was named an Honorable Mention All-CAA performer, while Hardy started the first ten games of the season.
In 2023, Ford developed Johncarlos Miller II into one of the best tight ends in FCS Football. Miller II was named First Team All-CAA and broke Elon’s Division I single-game, single-season and career receiving yards records by a tight end. In total, he had 25 catches for 453 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman Cody Hardy also made an impact, playing in all 11 games and adding four catches for 27 yards.
Prior to his time at Averett, Ford spent three years at Bucknell coaching tackles and tight ends, as well as serving as the recruiting coordinator. He was the tight ends coach at his alma mater, Lehigh, for the 2018 season and coached the tight ends and fullbacks at Valparaiso in 2017. He began his coaching career in 2016 at the tight ends and fullbacks coach at Franklin and Marshall.
Ford was a 2015 first team All-Patriot League player and team captain at left guard for Lehigh. He started all 11 games as both a junior and senior for the Mountain Hawks.
