RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University junior guard
Shay Burnett has been tabbed CAA Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Monday, Feb. 6.
Burnett had a stellar week leading the Phoenix to a 2-0 week with victories over Towson and UNCW. The junior led Elon in scoring in both games with 18 points on Friday, Feb. 3, in the 83-55 win over Towson and recorded a season-high 23 points Sunday, Feb. 5, in the 66-56 road win at UNCW.
In Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Burnett became the second Phoenix to eclipse the 1,000-point mark this season with a three-pointer early in the second half. In doing so, she became the 22nd player in program history to reach four-digit scoring totals. Last month,
Lauren Brown also hit a three-pointer early in the second half to surpass the 1,000-point mark.
Against UNCW, Burnett also fell two assists short of recording the program's first triple-double. On the week, she averaged 20.5 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists as Elon improved to 18-5 overall and 10-1 in CAA play.
The second CAA honor of the season for Burnett, she also won the Player of the Week award Dec. 26. This week, she shared the honor with College of Charleston's Breanna Bolden, who averaged 19.5 points, seven rebounds, four assists and 3.5 steals on the week. James Madison's Kamiah Smalls also earned her fifth CAA Rookie of the Week nod.
Burnett and the Phoenix will be back in action Friday night, Feb. 10, for a 7 p.m. matchup against Northeastern. Elon defeated the Huskies 76-65 on Jan. 27. Burnett also led the Phoenix in that game with a team-high 17 points with seven rebounds and seven assists.
