DeLAND, FL-- Scott Backman recorded a goal with 4:56 remaining as the Elon College men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to lead the Fightin' Christians to a 3-2 victory at Stetson University, Tuesday afternoon. Elon improves their record to 5-8-1, while ending a seven match winless streak. It was also Elon's first road win of the season.
Elon keeper Scot Wahl got a rare assist on match-winning goal when he drop kicked the ball 3/4 the length of the field as Backman took it the rest of the way for his ninth goal of the year.
The Hatters (5-6-1) put two goals on the board in the first nine minutes, but the Fightin' Christians cut the lead in half when Robert Latimer scored a penalty kick at the 27:33 mark.
Elon tied the match in the 80th minute when freshman Duran Martin scored his seventh goal of the season, on a one-on-one breakaway.
Starting keeper Paul Reuter recorded three saves for Elon, before being replaced by Wahl (four saves) at the half.
The Fightin' Christians will be in action once again, when they travel to Mobile, AL for a Saturday night match at South Alabama.
