GREENVILLE, SC - The Paladins Jason Wells missed a 36 yard field goal with 38 seconds remaing to assure the Fightin' Christians their first victory of the season. Elon (1-0), used its mechanical wishbone attack and a tenacious defense to keep Furman (0-1) at bay. The Fightin' Christians set the tone early in the game by producing an 18 play, 85 yard touchdown drive which chewed up 10 minutes of the first quarter clock.
Quaterback Derrick Moore, who left the late in the first half with a shoulder injury, led Elon to two early scores. Moore found Travis Whitaker in the endzone for a three yard TD pass and on their second possesion of the second quarter, Moore rushed in from two yards out. The first half belonged to Elon as they piled up a halftime score of 21-10. Their only miscue was a 93 yard kickoff return TD from the Paladins Des Kitchings.
Scott Stevens, a true frehman for the Fightin' Christians, replaced Moore at quarterback and helped keep Elon hold the lead despite a second half rally from Furman. Jim Willis' 22 yard field goal midway through the third padded Elon's lead to 24-10. The Paladins came to life and scored 12 unanswered points to end the quarter and cut the lead to 24-22. Steven Ferguson led the Fightin Christians in rushing gaining 82 yards on 11 carries. Before leaving the game Moore ran for 74 yards and a TD and completed two passes for 13 yards and a TD. Also adding to the rushing catergory were DeWayne Thomas (54 yds.), Daren Bethea (50 yds.) and Eric Jones (9 yds.). Stevens copleted one pass for 25 yards to Phillip Johnson. Also on the receving end were Whitaker and Brian Broadie each grabbing one reception. Defensively, Elon was led by Shanard Smith who collected 12 tackles (7UT, 5AT).
The leading rusher for Furman was Louis Ivory who ran for 98 yards on 18 carries. Quarterback Justin Hill completed nine passes for 116 yards.
