ELON – Elon football head coach
Tony Trisciani announced the hiring of Baer Hunter as the program's tight ends coach Wednesday. Hunter joins the Phoenix after multiple FBS coaching stops and a standout football career at Appalachian State.
"Coach Hunter brings a strong coaching pedigree to our program," Trisciani said. "The son of a highly successful college coach, a team captain and All-American at App State with game experience as a defensive end, tight end and center. He has worked with a talented offensive staff at Memphis and Arkansas for the past two years. Most importantly, Coach Hunter is a winner and a leader. We are excited to welcome him and his wife Maddy to our Elon Football family."
In addition to his time at Memphis and Arkansas most recently, Hunter has made additional stops at Middle Tennessee State, Wake Forest and Charlotte over the past four seasons.
"I'm fired up and honored to be named the tight ends coach at Elon University," Hunter said. "We're going to build a fast, physical, relentless unit that this program and community can be proud of. Phoenix fans, let's get to work!"
Hunter served as an offensive line assistant for Memphis in 2025. He helped guide an offensive line that produced three 500-yard rushers in 2025 and an 8-5 overall record. In 2024, he served as an assistant offensive line coach at Middle Tennessee State. He served as a graduate assistant at both Wake Forest (defensive line) in 2023 and Charlotte (offensive line) in 2022.
Hunter was an accomplished player at Appalachian State during the Mountaineers' best run of their FBS era (2016-21). He was a three-time All-Sun Belt selection, twice on the first team, made 52 career starts and was a Phil Steele All-America Honorable Mention in 2021 during his time in Boone. Hunter helped the Mountaineers win four straight Sun Belt titles (2016-19) and five straight bowl games (2016-20).
A native of Winston-Salem, Hunter played his high school football at West Forsyth. His father, John, served as the running backs coach at Wake Forest for 11 years under head coach Dave Clawson.
