Hempstead, NY -- Elon travelled to Hofstra Saturday hoping to spoil homecoming. Unfortunately, Hofstra did all the spoilling sending Elon home with a 38-27 loss.
The Pride (6-2) took the lead at the 12:41 mark of the second quarter on a safety of quarterback Derrick Moore. Hofsra also was the first team to find the endzone when red-shirt freshman Ryan Cosentino connected with Bill Morales for a six yard score. The point after made the score 9-0.
Elon (5-3) got back into it when Rashaud Palmer scampered in from 11 yards out to cap a seven play, 51 yard drive. The Phoenix then took the lead at the 4:17 mark when C.W. Singletary took it in from 33 yards out. The extra point put Elon ahead 14-9.
Hofstra had one last drive in them before the half, however. They went 80 yards on 13 plays in 3:28. Cosentino finished the drive by hit Charile Adams in the endzone and a 17-14 halftime lead.
The Pride struck first in the second half as Cosentino hit his third different reciever for a score. This time Kahmal Roy went in from 20 yards out.
Now down 10, the Phoenix fought back. Moore kept the ball for a rushing touchdown to cap a 11 play, 66 yard drive. Beau Wegmann added the point after and Elon now only trailed by three.
The Phoenix were driving for the lead near midfield with 8:18 left to play when Moore fumbled and Hofstra's Patrick Dorvelus recovered and rumbled 51 yards to put the game out of reach.
Both teams added another touchdown for a final score of 38-27. In the loss, Moore was 2 of 5 passing for 77 yards with one interception and 66 yards rushing. Cosentino was 25 of 46 for 262 yards and one pick.
The Phoenix will try to get back into the win column next Saturday when they travel to Charleston Southern for a 1:30 matchup.
