ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Derrick Moore rushed for 170 yards on 22 carries and passed for another 97 with two touchdowns as Elon defeated Gardner-Webb 41-17 for its third consecutive victory on Saturday at Burlington Memorial Stadium.
The contest, only Elon's second all year not against a nationally-ranked opponent, gave the Phoenix a Family Weekend victory in front of a season-high crowd of 8,122.
Moore's 267 net yards increased his career tally to 5,084 yards, making him only the fourth Elon player to surpass the 5,000-yard mark for total offense. Gardner-Webb (2-4) scored first on a 42-yard field goal by Andrew Harmon with 7:08 left in the first quarter. Elon (4-2) established a 17-3 lead with three second-quarter scores -- a five-yard Robert Downing TD run just :29 into the stanza, a career-best 46-yard Beau Wegmann field goal with 4:19 left and a 71-yard pass play from Moore to Arketa Banks with 1:45 remaining.
The Runnin' Bulldogs pulled within 17-10 to end the half when Jeremy Martin connected on an 82-yard pass play to Darin Bradford with 47 seconds to play before the intermission. Wegmann's 22-yard field goal stretched the Phoenix lead to 20-10 with 9:15 left in the third quarter.
Martin's 10-yard touchdown run with 6:45 left in the stanza brought Gardner-Webb within 20-17 to conclude third quarter scoring. Elon pulled away with a 21-0 fourth quarter as Downing scored on a 23-yard run with 14:17 left, Chris Bryan cashed in on a 36-yard run with 8:49 remaining and Banks scored on a six-yard pass from Moore with 5:11 left.
