ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Sophomore guard Erin Green scored a season-high 15 points in Elon's (7-10, 2-3) 76-58 upset win over Liberty University at Alumni Gym on Saturday.
The Phoenix came out quickly against the Flames, scoring the first five points of the contest. The Flames managed to grab a one point lead twice during the first period at 13:59 and 10:31. Liberty (7-10, 4-1) kept fighting, never letting the Elon lead grow to more than five until 5:31 remained in the first stanza when a layup by Jayme Chikos (seven points) made the lead seven. From that point Elon went on a 12-11 run to finish the half and led 34-26 at the break.
Liberty never had the lead during the second half, never managing to pull closer than three when Crystal Peace (team-high 11 points) hit two free throws to make the score 49-46 at the 9:23 mark. The Phoenix then slammed the door shut and managed to lead by as many as 20 points at the 2:30 point of the half when Holly Andrews (eight points) sank two free throws for a 71-51 lead.
Green paced the Phoenix with her 15 points, but added three assists and three boards to her stats. Loretta Lawson added 14 points for Elon, moving her to 983 in her Elon career. Milica Milosavljevic tied her career high with 10 points and dished outh two assists. Chikos added seven assists to up her team-leading total to 69 on the season. Tashina DeVeaux rejected two Liberty shots while Anestha Blakeney grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
For the Flames, both Kristina Palaimaite and Susan Foreid added eight points. Palaimaite also pulled down seven rebounds. Rachel Young notched five steals for Liberty. The loss was the first Big South contest Liberty had dropped since January 29, 2000 when they dropped a 56-51 decision to Radford. That span includes 15 straight wins over conference opponents (including tournament).
The Phoenix shot a season best 59.6 percent from the floor and outrebounded Liberty 38-26. Elon hit 56.7 percent from the line, Liberty 52.4 percent. The Phoenix also nailed three treys in the contest for a 42.9 percent clip. The Flames hit three of nine for 33.3 percent.
Elon will look to pick up its first road victory of the season Tuesday night when they travel to Radford. The game begins at 7:00 pm. The Highlanders are coming off of an 87-80 overtime loss to the High Point Panthers.
