GREENSBORO, NC -- After a sluggish performance in the first half that led to a 28-28 tie with North Carolina A&T at the break, the Phoenix held the Aggies to only 10 points in the second half to pick up the 65-38 victory in women's basketball Wednesday night at the Corbett Center. The win improves Elon to 2-5, while A&T falls to 0-7.
The Phoenix opened the second half of play with a 23-8 run which lasted until the 3:40 mark and then held the Aggies to only one more bucket on the night. In the second frame Elon connected on 46.2 percent of their shots, while holding A&T to a 9.4 percent shooting performance on 3-of-32 shooting in the half.
Led by Holly Andrews' career-high-tying 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting (including 3-of-4 from behind the arc), the Phoenix shot 40.4 percent for the game. Mariam McLeod and Anestha Blakeney also recorded double digit scoring performaces, each adding 11 points on the night. Jayme Chikos dished out a game-high six assists and Andrews added five assists. Blakeney led the team with eight rebounds, six on the offensive end, and one block. Courtney Nyborg added to her team-leading block total, rejecting two shots for the sixth time in seven games.
Tawanda Jackson scored a team-high eight points and Tia Richardson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Aggies. Richardson also added two blocks.
Elon dominated the boards, grabbing 58 rebounds (23 offensive) to A&T's 34. The Phoenix also held leads in assists (14-5) and blocks (5-2). The Aggies led in steals (9-8) and turnovers (21-24).
Elon will take 11 days off for exams before returning to action on December 16 at Jacksonville. The game will tip at 2:00 pm.
