WESTMONT, IL –-
Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette declared Elon University senior offensive lineman
Scott McLain (Springfield, VA/West Springfield H.S.) a First Team NCAA-IAA All-American Saturday afternoon.
The 6-4, 295-pound right guard becomes the 39th Elon All-American football player to be tabbed to either a first, second or third postseason team during the program’s 80-year history. Along with all Football Gazette First Team All-Americans, McLain’s name will be forever listed in the annual NCAA Football Record Book.
Elon’s lone senior offensive starter this past year, McLain helped the Phoenix to finish the regular season ranked 18th among the country’s 123 NCAA-IAA teams in rushing offense. Elon averaged 212.6 yards per game on the ground during the 2001 season.
A two-time Football Gazette National Offensive Lineman of the Week this fall, McLain entered the year as a Football Gazette First Team Preseason All-American. In 2000, he emerged from Elon’s 7-4 campaign as a Football Gazette Third Team All-American.
The Phoenix finished the 2001 campaign with an uncharacteristic 2-9 record, suffering seven losses to nationally-ranked teams while playing the country’s toughest schedule (www.ncaa.org) for the third consecutive season.
