GREENVILLE, NC -- The East Carolina Pirates picked up their first victory of the 2002 season Wednesday night, defeating the Phoenix 5-2 behind a goal and three assists from Brian Deutsch. The win improves ECU to 1-3-0, while Elon now sports a 1-3-0 record as well.
The Pirates got on the board first on a score from Andy Tabor at only 4:58 into the game. ECU added its second first half tally on Deutsch's score at 27:47. The Phoenix would cut the deficit in half at the 37:12 mark on an unassisted goal from Paul Bellacqua.
ECU would up the lead to two markers again nearly 10 minutes into the second half as Josh Foltz found the back of the net.
Tim Sullivan would again pull Elon within one at the 80:47 mark of the contest on an unassisted goal. ECU would storm right back again, scoring two goals in the next five minutes to finish the scoring in the game.
Both keepers, Kyle Ostendorf for Elon and R.J. Marvinney for ECU, grabbed five saves. ECU got off 16 shots to Elon's 12 and Elon led in corners 7-1.
The Phoenix will begin Big South play this weekend when they host Radford on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
