DAYTON, OH -- The Elon Phoenix (2-4-1) was defeated Friday night 3-2 by the University of Denver (3-3-0) in a tournament hosted by the University of Dayton.
The game got off to a slow beginning, and it wasn't until the second period that the action got started. Three minutes and 28 seconds into the second period, Denver's Robert Rice scored on a breakaway to put the Pioneers up 1-0.
The Pioneers' lead remained short-lived though, as Brandon Hayes then scored two goals in a little over 10 minutes. Hayes's first goal came in the 59-minute mark when he headed a goal from Paul Bellacqua into the right side of the net. His second goal came from Brent McDowell in the 70-minute mark to put the Phoenix up 2-1.
Denver retaliated by scoring two goals in under five minutes to regain the lead and secure the victory. Alejandro Diaz and Travis Hendricks scored at 82:28 and 87:14 respectively to finish off the Phoenix.
The Phoenix will next take on Vermont, Sunday at Noon.
