STATESBORO, Ga. -- Lawrence Smith scored two goals to lead Georgia Southern to a 3-1 victory over SoCon foe Elon Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
With the win, the Eagles move to 6-5-4 on the season, 3-2-1 in SoCon play, while Elon drops to 4-10-4 on the year, 1-5-1 in the SoCon.
The Eagles took the lead as time expired in the first half as freshman Justin Elie took a pass from Patrick O’Brien and dribbled the ball past several Phoenix defenders for a one-on-one with the keeper, giving GSU the 1-0 lead at the midway point. Elie’s goal was his first of his career.
Just seconds into the second half, at the 45:56 mark, Elon tied the game as Brett Paschall kicked the ball past GSU keeper Adam Webb, evening the match at 1-1.
At the 78:10 mark, Smith scored his first goal of the afternoon on the double assist from Tyler Mullen and Elie, putting the Eagles up 2-1. Less than a minute later Greg DeVito found Smith once again, as he scored Eagles’ third goal of the game, giving Georgia Southern the 3-1 win.
Georgia Southern out shot Elon 15-5, as the Eagles held the Phoenix to only one shot in the second half. Webb tallied two saves on the day, while Elon’s Taylor Saxe recorded eight.
Georgia Southern returns to Eagle Field on Wednesday, Nov. 3 for the final home match of the 2004 season as it hosts intra-state rival Mercer. Match time is set for 3:00 p.m. Elon returns to the field on Wednesday as well, as it hosts Liberty.
