Phoenix Ready For Spring Football Practice

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University football team will begin its 2006 spring practice schedule at the Hunt Field and Tucker Field practice facility at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, following the institution’s spring break next week. The 15-session schedule concludes with the Annual Phoenix Spring Game at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at Rhodes Stadium.

All practices (see below schedule) are open to the public. All times and dates are subject to change due to weather conditions. Please contact the Elon Sports Information Office at (336) 278-6711 to check on possible schedule changes.

“The wonderful weather we are enjoying here in North Carolina certainly would have allowed us to begin spring practice sooner,” said first-year Phoenix head coach Pete Lembo. “However, since we are a new staff, there were three critical reasons for beginning practice after spring break. First, by lengthening our winter workouts, we had more time to establish expectations and policies with the players before hitting the practice field. Second, our coaching staff had more time to thoroughly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of our personnel. Lastly, it has allowed our staff to spend additional time getting on the same page schematically since our entire first month here was dedicated to recruiting. That being said, it has been a productive off-season and now we are all anxious to teach fundamentals, install our systems and evaluate these young men with their pads on.”

In 2005, the Phoenix produced four Southern Conference Players of the Week, three Southern Conference Players of the Month, three coaches’ All-Southern Conference selections, two media All-Southern Conference choices, six TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference selections, a Southern Conference Player of the Year by both the league’s coaches and media, two National Players of the Week, two Football Gazette All-Southeast Region honorees, two Academic All-District recipients, a Football Gazette Regional and National Linebacker of the Year, an NCAA-IAA national statistical category champion and an All-American.
